4.0 out of 5 stars Game is great, the collector's stuff is good if you're a Quake Fan, December 17, 2007

This review is from: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Limited Collectors Edition (Video Game)
Since the regular edition has already been reviewed a few times, I'll start with discussing the collector's edition's bonus content. For the collector's edition, you get the nifty (and quite sturdy) slipcase, the collector's cards, and the bonus DVD. Unlike in some games, for balance reasons, you obviously get no in-game advantage for buying the collector's edition (like getting extra weapons for the NC INTERACTIVE Guild Wars Special Edition ( Windows )), and a nifty flying whelp for World Of Warcraft Burning Crusade Collector's Edition). Having said that, if you are a Quake Fan (and I am, having bought action figures to adorn my office and such), the extra content is well worth the extra 10 bucks. As I had said, the slipcase is very well made, with a nice pocket to put all the stuff in, the picture cards are very well drawn and good sized (about 5 by 8 inches?), and the bonus DVD is good. I'll be honest, I haven't looked at the bonus DVD much, since I've been too busy playing the game! (I may update my review after watching the bonus DVD in its entirety.) I would also like to point out that the collector's edition is still in the regular small game form factor, so this game will fit on your shelf (unlike some of the other collector's editions out there that have the large form factor, taking in a full 12 by 18 inches or so).

I did also want to point out some good features of Quake Wars (either edition).
1. No intrusive copy protection for single players (in fact, you don't even need internet connection to install the game [unlike Valve games, for example])
2. It's easy to set up a server, and since it's server based, you can take a bit of CPU load off of the players.
3. Innovative mission objectives. Instead of just killing this or running a flag from here to there, there are objectives specific to certain classes, like repair/build a generator here (specific to to the engineering class), set up a demo pack here (soldier class), rain down artillery there (for the scout class).
4. Innovative scoring system. Because of the unique mission objectives, you don't win on points. You either complete your objective or you don't, which is more realistic, and also places the focus away from being a good First Person Shooter to being a good squadmate. You can rack up 500 kills, but if you don't complete the mission, you still lose.
5. No minimum number of players for multiplayer games. This means that if you have a small group of friends or wish to try out strategies before going online, you can have a multiplayer game all by yourself.

There are some minor issues, but that's from a jaded person like me.
1. No cutscenes except for opening scene (nothing new for ID software, so you shouldn't be surprised).
2. No tutorial (again, nothing new for ID software, so I'm sure everyone will forgive them for that, too).
3. Not a lot of maps. You get 4 campaigns, each with about 3 maps each. I hope the community will be releasing new maps, along with good missions, soon.
4. No instructions on how to operate them flyers. I can operate the tanks and all, but I keep crashing the flyers, so a good explanation on how to fly, and how the different controls affect direction, would be helpful.

Definitely a game to buy. And if you're a Quake fan, definitely worth the collector's edition.

ET:QW is a great team based game. Even though it is a few years old, the gameplay mechanics are solid and is very fun. Teamwork is very important, and although it can be hard to find a well coordinated team, there are always competent bots at your disposal. I bought the game for $7 including shipping and am not disappointed. If you're looking for some quick fun and are currently bored of the current games I suggest that you pick this game up. For less than $10 it's a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake wars, May 19, 2009

This game is really well made - high quality everything. The one thing that stops this game from being the funnest ever is how much work it is to play. It is exhausting. another negative is that the GDF or human-side have a very small selection of weapons to use. It really is a great game beyond that though.

High system requirements by the way. (really sweet graphics if you have a nice system)And the bots are also high quality.
