From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7 In The Enemy Within, Jennifer and three friends are driven into a forest by alien creatures (wolfbeasts). This sci-fi no-thriller has the aliens in cahoots with the police during a world takeover. Never is it properly explained how these students discovered the presence of aliens or how three adults were convinced of the aliens' plot to transform earth's atmosphere into one which only they can breathe. Too many loose ends abound that confuse rather than establish the intended intrigue for the sequel, The Last Alien. Acid rain and industrial pollution have been named as reasons for earth's destruction, and Jennifer and friends ruin all of the alien laboratories. These labs contained special life-support systems for the aliens. Suspense is better here, but readers still won't care about the characters. Halloween serves as the mood backdrop, which provides adequate opportunity for Jennifer to dispose of a wolf among men. The second book is better than the first, but neither can be recommended for any library. Kristine Johnson, Parcells Middle School, Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.
