This is about as close to regular "white bread" as gluten intolerant people can get. Both of my kids are intolerant. This bread has been a life saver for us. You don't have to toast it (with most wheat-free breads you do). You can actually make a sandwich for a lunch (like school, work, etc.) and it is still edible by noon. Our experience has been that most wheat-free bread is like a retaining wall brick and only good for toast. This stuff works for toast, sandwiches(most important), french toast, whatever. Not crumbly or stiff. Just great bread!!!

Toast Gluten Free Bread!,

I have tried a lot of different Gluten Free Bread. I would like to give some advice to any of you Celiac sufferer's. If you miss a good old fashioned sandwich because you can't eat regular bread, toast your Gluten Free bread. It makes it considerably less dry and sticky in your mouth. It is 100 times better this way and you will enjoy your sandwiches once again.
As for Ener-G Foods Light Brown Rice Bread? It is very good. Remember toast your bread. You don't even have to toast it till it is dark. Just put it in the toaster for a few minutes.

My experience with gluten-free breads goes back over 22 years. This is the best gluten free bread I've found for toasting. It actually turns a nice shade of brown in the toaster without burning. Good flavor and consistency. I add butter, cinnamon and sugar or peanut butter to mine.. keeps very well in the fridge.

We have been GF for 12 years, so we have had a lot of GF bread. I ordered this one based on the rave reviews here. It is good, but no better than other EnerG breads that you can find at local stores, namely Tapioca. I was also surprised that it is MUCH browner than the picture. I think for kids this would be a big turnoff. It is kind of unappetizing. (not flecked brown, like whole wheat, just a sickly tannish brown.) It does NOT look like this picture. That's where the white rice or tapioca versions would be better, as they are lighter. I believe this brown rice version is healthier than others, so DO get it if you want some variety in your GF diet.
Update March 2009: We were very disappointed in the bread that was shipped last time. the loaves had large holes in them (2-3 inches!!) or were misshapen to the point of being a triangle, half the normal size. They were not worth the money, so I would now have to rate 3 stars. Amazon won't let me change the rating above :(

Probably one of the best GF Breads,

This is probably one of the best Gluten Free Breads out there. It's not heavy & dense like most Gluten Free breads on the market. It's actually a pretty light bread. The texture is pretty close to regular sandwich bread. As with all Gluten Free breads, I like it toasted. Yummy! I highly recommend this bread. The reason I gave it only four stars is because I wish the slices were bigger pieces of bread. The thickness is great but, the size of most Gluten Free breads tend to be on the smaller side.

Great flavor, light and fluffy, and good texture. Only down side is that the bread tends to dissolve with to much moisture, and has a tendency to be a little dry but great for sandwiches. Unlike other gluten-free breads that tend to be so heavy that they over power anything you put in the middle.

This is the only gluten free bread that doesn't need to be toasted. It is perfect for pb&j, you can travel with it easily, and it is very light and soft (not as moist as regular bread, though), not dense and crumbly like other gluten free breads. Also it is vacuum sealed so it lasts a long time and you never need to freeze it.

I didn't expect miracles. I justed wanted bread back into my life so that every now and then I could have a small piece with butter and jam for breakfast or two slices for a PB & J sandwich. Yep, it's the simple things that I've missed.
It was so frustrating watching people dive into bread baskets at the restaurants when I had to wait patiently for the salads and soups to arrive. But now I know that I can go home and have a piece of Ener-G Foods Light Brown Rice Loaf. And hey, it's almost as good as the real thing. "Almost" meaning I went from a 0% bread lifestyle to 100%. That's a big increase!!! So, what's it like? Well, it's not yeasty... or wheaty... or bready. It doesn't have that rich grainy and buttery flavor like real bread. And when you toast it, it's not going to make your kitchen smell like a bakery. But it's pretty darn good especially when you haven't had bread in a long time. I had a breakfast sandwich this morning! What about you? To reiterate what other reviewers have already pointed out... You need toast it. Even just slightly to heat it up. Then it will feel and taste like bread. Otherwise, it's more like cardboard. Don't blame the bread though. That is how rice starches work. Ever put left over rice in the refrigerator and then try to eat it the next day? Have you noticed that if you under-microwave the cold rice, it's hard and powdery? BINGO! It's the rice starches. They're cold. So just remember to toast the bread. A little for sandwiches or a lot to get it dark for butter and jam. This weekend, I'm going to try grilled cheese and heck... maybe even FRENCH TOAST!!!

when i recieved my bread i didn't realize how small the slices would be, but the size lends to appetizers or small sandwiches for kids. the bread itself has a sourdough taste to it which is cool, but it's really dry. it made me nervous about the bread that it had a long shelf life in a vacuum seal. i'm not used to that. i found myself eating less and less bread which is a good thing overall. i will keep the loaves to make breadcrumbs, veggie burgers and maybe a bread pudding. if you have to get a readymade bread, go for it. it's not terrible, but it's really different from the usual wheat bread that i now have to avoid. i think i will try my hand at making gluten free bread at home instead of relying on outside sources. i gave it 3 stars because though there were some things i didn't care for i still can see it used in other ways in the kitchen.
