More About the Author

Puran Bair has personally changed tens of thousands of lives over the past three decades, having led thousands of meditation workshops and retreats, and co-founded the 20-year-old Institute for Applied Meditation. He is also the co-author of a new book, Energize Your Heart In Four Dimensions, which highlights a ground-breaking method that utilizes unique heart-centric meditations to decrease stress, reduce disease risk, and energize the body.

Puran is an American mystic, one of the foremost meditation teachers and a pioneer in bringing heart-based meditation to the public. An author, scientist and businessman, the curriculum he's designed applies authentic spiritual teaching to health, relationships and accomplishments. His first book, Living From The Heart, was praised by Random House as being "one of the most important texts ever written on meditation."

Puran came to his mystical experiences the hard way -- 30 years of discipleship including a 28-day retreat, fasting in solitude in a cave in the Alps with around-the-clock meditation -- and it's his hope that his teaching will make the path shorter for his students. He is one of the successors of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the first Indian sage to bring to the West the message of universal brotherhood and the union behind all religions.

The Tucson-based meditation master has traveled across the nation and Europe, teaching Heart Rhythm Meditation to CEOs, teams and individuals at numerous conferences and programs. He has taught meditation to executives at multi-national companies and to celebrity singers and actors. He also teaches through four web courses he created for The Institute for Applied Meditation, Inc. using innovative software to integrate the instructional material with a worldwide forum for dialoguing with a live teacher on a daily basis.

He has also worked with leading researchers to document the physiological changes that occur during the different stages of meditation, including metabolism, heart rhythm, brain waves, light emission and electromagnetism.

Known as the "Whistling Dervish," Puran's music is enchanting, a direct transmission of his inner state to his audience. He sings his original songs as part of his teaching, and demonstrates and teaches his method of high-speed whirling as an ecstatic dance.

Puran's background is in technology and business, and his teaching often refers to applications of the heart in business. Until 2003, he was the president of BAR Systems, Inc., the developer and vendor of a computer system for portfolio analysis, still used by several mutual fund companies. For fifteen years he was an analyst for Fidelity, Putnam, and Merrill Lynch, becoming a vice-president of MFS, a mutual fund company in Boston. Previously, he worked as a computer scientist for IBM, Burroughs, EG&G and AT&T. He has developed several environmentally-sound inventions. He holds one patent in wind-energy power, with a second patent pending in high-speed, computerized composting, both from companies he started in those fields. Through that work he was invited to speak several times to the United Nations Environment Programme at the UN building in New York.

Puran holds an MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University. He was born in 1944 and has five children.

Puran and Susanna Bair have written and excellent introduction to Meditation. So often instructions on meditation are about "watching" your breath, or imagining being in a "happy or calming" place that it is refreshing to read an introduction to Meditation that instructs you on not only what to do with your breath and why but how to make every place a better place. Just getting in contact with the heart was a great experience; when I connected the breath with the heart beat I found a great tool for life. The practices all have a greater purpose. I was never bored during a mediation since I always had things to focus my concentration on.

What this book delivers that so many other books miss, and the main reason I recommend it so highly, is how to use Meditation as a tool rather than the end goal. With the methods in this book you will learn different Meditation practices to enhance your spirituality/religious beliefs, to increase your acceptance of self and thus of others, to broaden your perspective, or to find answers to questions.

I've been practicing the different methods regularly and have found them transforming in both work and personal life. Many people have inquired as to what I do to remain calm yet full of energy, how I find my insight into problems or how I seem relate to all people. But mostly they ask what kind of daily practices to I do to maintain my energy and optimism. In response I ended up purchasing 5 copies and giving them away as gifts to the ones that seemed really interested in trying something new.

Every cardiologist's office should have a copy of this book and every cardiologist should recommend it to his/her patients.

On the physical level, Energize Your Heart is chock full of concrete, down-to-earth information on how to regulate your blood pressure and increase the strength and resiliency of your heart.

On the emotional level, Energize Your Heart suggests many ways to enter the realm of your feelings, and either move through the scary or painful ones, or expand the courageous, happy ones. This also helps with achieving your goals, be they personal, career, or societal.

On a spiritual level, Energize Your Heart provides teachings on how we are all part of the Universal Heart that connects us all.

This book is health-inducing, encouraging, comforting. It is a great resource to return to over and over again, as a practice manual and reference guide. Its larger mission is to seed a heart-based world society--which happens naturally as each one of us returns to our own heart first and lives from there.

I found Energize Your Heart interesting to read. I learned a lot about the heart I did not know or misunderstood. It wasn't until I actually did some of the exercises that I experienced the immeasurable potential of developing the power and capacity of my heart. Thinking alone will not uncover the buried treasure in my heart. I need to dig. Heart Rhythm Meditation gives me the tools I need. Without these tools I would still be sitting on top of a gold mine with a spoon.

Yes, yes, the title is "Energize Your Heart" but this is just a side-effect, so to speak, of expanding the dimensions of your heart.

This is the second title using the methodology of Heart Rhythm Meditation---the first being, Living from the Heart: Heart Rhythm Meditation for Energy, Clarity, Peace, Joy, and Inner Power. Although this is the second book, it might actually be the best place to start for a beginner as it gives most practical exercises to diagnose one's heart's dimensions and then expand them.

In considering different levels of our hearts---physical, emotional and deep inner spirit level---most adults have a sense of how it feels to have restrictions or wounds or compromises with or within their hearts. Expanding at any of these levels brings ease and openings that might translate into health, well-being and a more radiant influence on the world around us, however we might express these.

What is expanded and expressed are the dimensions of the heart or the qualities of our being that comprise aspects of the heart and emanate from it. For example, (-height-) idealism and optimism; (-depth-) empathy and sincerity; (-width-) receptivity and influence; (-forward-) generosity and creativity; (-inner-) capacity for growth and love.

If you are one that would like to dive right in, jump to Chapter 4, Stretching the Heart, and do as many of the easy steps as you can. Feel your way into how broad your heart actually is ........ and most importantly, read and reflect on the "Exercises for Life" related to these steps.
