The Energizer Trail Finder Pro 7 LED Headlamp is a versatile light source that provides three different levels of illumination, a red light mode for night vision, and a strobe mode for emergencies. There are two red, and five white LED’s, arranged to provide a nice wide field of coverage. Maximum output is 100 lumens, with all five white LED’s on.

Powered by three AAA batteries (which are included), the unit is controlled by the power button located on the top of the lamp. Pressing once puts the headlamp into the red light mode. Continuing to press the button, causes the light to cycle through the various modes, finishing with the strobe mode.

The performance of the headlight is very good, as it provides a nice level of illumination, over a fairly wide field of view, however there are other aspects that majorly detract from the product’s usability. The headband lacks a piece that goes over the top of the head, which makes the light prone to sliding around, depending on how much you move your head, and the amount of hair you have.

The real annoyance is the way the hinge operates. A plate rests against the forehead, while the light clicks through to one of four positions. The problem is that in the first two positions, if you look up, or tilt your head upwards, gravity causes the headlamp to swing back so that it rests against the forehead. If you are looking around, and moving your head up and down, having to adjust and reposition the light, can quickly become ridiculous and frustrating. Having the light bang against your head, gets pretty annoying as well. When you pivot the light into the last two positions, it does lock into place, but you also begin to get some glare in your eyes. So there are some BIG practical issues with this product.

Long ago, in a retail store far far away (REI), I bought a rather overpriced, underperforming headlamp by a company I won't name (though their name rhymes with "pretzel"). Then, for about half the price, I discovered this Energizer model and tried it out. I love this lamp! It is brighter, more versatile and offers more illumination options than the other one, and at literally half the price. I use it for night hiking, rock climbing, caving, and even nighttime swimming (no, it is not waterproof, but I do a lot of lake swimming, and since I go after work, it sometimes gets dark on me before I get done swimming across and back, so I just turn this headlamp on the red light setting and place it at my starting point so I can find my way back; works like a charm!). This lamp is a bit on the large side, so people with smaller builds, especially women, may feel a bit like Robocop wearing this thing, but for me (5' 11" 200 lbs) it is not bulky or uncomfortable at all. And they made a great improvement on the new ones: the back cover plate, which must be removed to replace the batteries, is now tethered to the body of the lamp with a little strap. That is GREAT because I once misplaced the back cover on my old one, and without that plate the lamp is basically useless. I now own 4 of these and I love them!

I should of heeded the warning of the bad reviews on this one. The notches that hold the light in an angled position just plain suck. The light just flops up and down. Avoid this one.....I'm very disappointed.

Two major issues -- I find that there is too much spill light down into my eyes - limiting its function (others have remarked that they did not find this to be the case) AND the blasted position ratchet gave out after only a few weeks of use. I've had it for over a year and continue to suffer its shortcomings - I would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Have had the headlamp for about a week now and I really like it. It's been plenty bright as I do projects around the house after sundown. I really like the different settings (red, 3/5/7 LED and flash). I also really like the ability to adjust the direction of the lamp, though I wish that the lamp would more securely "lock" into these auxiliary positions instead of simply relying upon gravity to hold it there. For example, assume that the nominal "straight ahead" lamp position is position "0" and the first auxiliary position rotated forward is position "1". Rotating the lamp forward from "0" to "1" you hear a mechanical click and then the lamp stops at "1"; I have never had a case where the lamp rotated further forward (to position "2", for example) without input from me. However, if the lamp is in position "1" and you quickly snap your head up, the inertia from your movement can snap the light from position "1" back to position "0". This isn't enough to cause me to not use the light, in fact I think it's great and plan on using it a lot. But if I was using it for an application where I was constantly jostling around or in constant motion (jogging?) I would definitely shop for a different lamp where the positions are more "locked in" so that it's not bouncing around all the time. But for what the lamp cost, I'm very happy with it.

This is a very nice head lamp. It is very bright and comfortable to wear. My only complaint is that fact you have to cycle through all modes to turn it off. Not a huge problem but slightly inconvenient.
