OK, but has some drawbacks,
By Larry K. (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
This provides plenty of light, but there are some drawbacks.
Drawback #1: This thing has four modes: White Spotlight, White Floodlight, White Spot plus Flood, Red, and OFF. The selection is made by pressing one switch over and over. This is a pain, especially since the switch is small and rather stiff. With gloves on it's almost impossible. It also means that to get to the night vision friendly RED you've got to step through 3 WHITE settings. Drawback #2: The LED's are not recessed and don't have reflectors to direct the light forward. I wear glasses and the stray light hits my glasses and makes it almost impossible to see. I later "fixed" this by painting the lower portion of the assembly with black car touch-up paint. This greatly reduced the stray light problem. Before I purchased the 6 LED model I had the 3 LED model. Other than not beeing as bright, it is a better design because it has a 3 position slider switch...center OFF, left RED, right WHITE. So, if you want RED, you go straight to RED. Also, the LED's are recessed a bit and don't throw nearly as much light into my face as this 6 LED model did. Note that I just saw a new Energizer head lamp that seems to fix the stray light problem. It has a high power LED with reflector for the spot light, the but the unit is rather bulky. Unfortunately, it looks to have the same crappy push-button switch design as this one. As of the date of this review, the picture is that of the 3 LED lamp. I advised Amazon of the error but they said it was fine as is. Whatever.

Great headlight but awkward switch,
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
I love having one headlight that can do red and white light, and both a narrow and wide beam in white, and all of the settings are bright enough for me. Howevever, to move between the different settings you have to repeatedly click on a push switch which is very stiff. What would be ideal for me would be a slider switch that you move back and forth between the different settings, or four separate push switches.
My only other complaint is that the light can shine in your eyes if you wear it too low on your forehead. As someone else noted, the pictured item is another headlight from Energizer, not the 6-led version.

Great product,

This is one of the simplest and yet most effective LED headlights out there. The multiple lighting options gives you a wide variety of choices for any situation that requires a little or a lot of light. I love mine for hiking, biking, and even work.
This model was difficult to find last year. I'm very happy that Energizer decided to reintroduce the product. I do have a bit of a beef with this product listing on Amazon. The site shows a very bogus "List" price of $74.61 but they'll discount it 70% or $52.55 to a price of $22.06. Give me a break! On what planet would this list for $74.61? I know this is Amazon's site but you can pick this light up at any discount store, like Target, for $14.99! Energizer also has a 3 LED version and another version with a 1 watt LED spot. All are great products. Another note to the Amazon Webmaster: You might want to double check that you have the correct picture associated with the described product. You picture the 3 LED light and describe the 6. I'm a very active Amazon Prime customer so I think I have earned the right to say who ever edited this product site really screwed the pooch. Update: I will give Amazon some credit for actually reading reviews. Less than 24 hours after my review they adjusted the "list" price from $74.61 to a still too high but more realistic $24.95 "discounted" 12% or 2.89 for a price of $22.06. This is still $7 higher than the average discount store (more when you factor in shipping). Now, they just need to correct the picture to the product description.

I bought the new 6-LED headlight at Wal-Mart for less that $15 - and it's well worth it. I like the multiple white LED options for floodlight vs. spotlight vs. both, as well as the red LEDs. I also own the 3-LED version of Engergizer's headlight as well, but the new 6-LED version is a little more water resistant. Works great so far, and at $15, you really can't go wrong!

Red is first now,
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
I purchased this locally in 12/2008 and it appears Energizer has listened to feedback and has updated this model somewhat. My model is HDL33A2E. The headlight is pretty much as others have said EXCEPT the red light is now FIRST in the sequence of light modes. So night vision is not destroyed ... that is, at least not until you turn it off because you still have to cycle through all the modes then. And the button is STILL hard to press, which makes having to go through all the cycles to turn it off even more irritating and actually a little painful.

Great Light - Highly Recommend,
By Sasquatch (Rochester, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
I purchased one of these about a year ago. I love having light without tying up my hands or in some cases my mouth. The light is bright, doesn't burn through batteries and is easy to use. I have strapped it onto my youngest (18 months) son's head during a power outage, he didn't miss a beat. On the floodlight setting it outperformed my led lanterns during another power outage. I just set it on top of my hutch and went about my business. I have used this for outdoor projects in place of my 1000 watt halogen flood lights. While it is not as bright the spotlight is always right where you need it. I also don't have to worry about blocking out my light. The pivoting head is also handy for reading or carrying on conversations without blinding your friends.
The only complaint I've heard was from my mother in law who had trouble with the switch. It does take a bit of pressure to change the settings. If that would be a problem for you Energizer's 3 LED headlamp might be a better fit. It is less expensive and not quite as versatile but still a great light and it has a slide switch. The main difference is that the 3 LED model only has two settings white (kind of a flood/spot mix) and red to allow for better retention of night vision. The 6 LED version has four settings: spot (2LED), flood(2LED), spot/flood (4LED uses batteries faster), and red(2LED). I liked the 3 LED version enough to get one for each of my six kids. They love them and we've even used them on bike rides when we have been caught out too late. To summarize: These are great, versatile lights, that are bright, allow hands free operation, are light weight, conserve batteries, and are simple enough for a child to use.

Excellent Lamp,
By Night Owl (Northern CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
This lamp is excellent, because first, it has the smallest footprint on your head of nearly all other headlamps. It is very compact and light and not the least bit bulky. The headlamp has both a spot light and a broad light, which can be switched on separately or together the give a lot of light. The red "night vision" light works very well in the dark. My greatest satisfaction has come from the fact that the lights tilt on the base, so when working on something in the dark, you don't have to move your head to get the light on the subject, but simply tilt the lights to the best spot and work away. The only (small)negative is that while the light power is more than adequate for me, there are other headlamps which put out a larger longer beam (they are also bulkier). More light is not something I have needed.

The Energizer Headlamps Are Too Flimsy,
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
I have bought both the 3- and the 6-LED Energizer headlights. They're great. I love them. (I got them for $6 and $10, respectively, at Home Depot.)
The BIG problem is that they simply don't last. I do use them on a daily basis, but both broke repeatedly over just a few months of use. They simply (literally) fall apart. They can be repaired--for a while--but when you need a headlight in the wilderness, you need something reliable. The Energizer headlights do not meet that requirement, thus I would advise against them. Pity!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'd been looking for a LED headlight set-up, both for keeping in the glove boxes of my autos and for carrying on my ATV while camping in the desert. I'd resigned myself to paying higher prices for the more exotic brands, but when I read the features (multiple function LEDs, red light, tilting head) on these units, and TWO units for the price of one of the other brands, I took a chance. Well, the lights are even better than I expected. These lights are green camo in color (great for the outdoorsman), of quality construction and simple to wear. Illumination is first-rate. I've ordered two more. Very pleased with this product!

Not worth it,
By Anodyne (Durham, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Energizer 6 LED Headlight With Bright Lights (Sports)
Bought two of these at a local home supply store but returned them after trying them out at home. I found the light to be pitifully weak, certainly nowhere near the advertised 36 lumens. I returned them and purchased a pair of Princeton Tec Fuel head lamps, which were more expensive (about $7 more apiece) but function much better and feel better built.
There are lots of other good reviews for these lamps, so maybe others have had better luck than I did, but I would not recommend. |
