5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fluorescent Lantern for the money, February 9, 2007
This review is from: Energizer(R) Folding Fluorescent Lantern (Sports)
This Energizer (formerly EverReady) lantern is a great compromise for a portable fluorescent light--small size, 7 5/8" tall; 4 1/2" wide; 3 1/4" thick; fairly bright, flood pattern, selector switch to light one tube for 40 hours of battery life; two tubes, brighter, for 20 hours of battery life, and an amber night light that should last for several hundred hours of battery life; uses four D size batteries which are more covenient, readily available, and cost less than heavy 6-volt batteries; uses two replaceable Hg fluorescent tubes; has adjustable height and angle of light from straight verticle, in lower position, through 12 click positions to 180 degrees verticle in upper height position, which when extended is 14 1/8" tall; has a reflective, mirror like surface in the lower position, to direct more light forward (somewhat effective); a folding carry handle, and a 3-position on-off switch which is not a super-positive click switch but is certainly adequate.

This is a plastic device and not an indestructable lantern. Like many portable lanterns, a four foot drop on a hard surface may damage the unit. It very likely will still work. The light output is quite good for emergencies, handyman/maintenance activities, and camping. Do not expect it to light an entire room. It will be much less light output than a 40 watt bulb.

You can buy it on-line for $14.95 to $24.95. I bought one yesterday from my local Home Depot for $12.97 plus tax. I'm going back for another. I have soured on 6-volt lanterns due to the weight and cost of the batteries, and when in lanterns for a long period of time they are more prone, than D,C, or AA batteries, to crack open and seep battery acid, ruining the lantern or flashlight.

The LED light lanterns looked nice but try them first if you can--many provide very little useable light, tend to be more of a spot pattern as opposed to flood, and most cost upwards of $34.95. One or two I looked at appeared to be very rugged, but were very heavy and very expensive.

For the price and features, the Energizer Lantern is a bargain, great for emergencies, work, or camping. However, it is still a good idea to have one or more 2 or 3-cell flashlights on hand--in either D, C, or AA batteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love 'EM, March 24, 2007

Walmart had these on sale for less than $5 right before Katrina hit. I bought one and then went back for 4 more. I was without power for 9 days and had one in almost every room of the house. They work great! The folding design allowed me to place it on the headboard and use it to read by at night. Another nice feature is the ability to turn on either one tube or both for more light. The handle makes carrying easy. Very versatile light but heavier than a flashlight. Uses 4 "D" cell batteries. Battery compartment is accessible with a coin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool, January 19, 2007

This flashlight is very unique, and I like it so much I plan to buy a whole box of these things.

It is about the size of 3 paperback novels and uses 4 D batteries. With the big, easy carry handle, it is quite small, easy to carry, and versatile. One just one set of batteries, it is rated at a dozen hours on high with 2 tubes, and double that if you use just one tube. The light it gives is rather dim, but very directional and therefore very useable.

Even though I just bought them, I have discovered 2 indispensable uses for this dandy thing. Since it is flat and square, it fits easily into an overnight pack that is already over-loaded, and gives better light than most backpacking lanterns. It also works on the nightstand next to your bed with the nightlight on all the time; the nightlight is LED and uses almost no juice, and is an important light source if an emergency occurs while you are in bed: just reach out, grab it, and turn on the tubes.

My only complaint is the rather flimsy, lighweight switch. It would seem to be easy to break, and also easy to accidentally activate or change the switch setting.

You really ought to have several of these things; it will prove to be quite popular at home and at work.
