From the Manufacturer

Deep bass thunder adds a new dimension to your music, games and movies. The ESW-C8 subwoofer provides the power you've been missing. With 240 watts, you'll hear--and feel--bass the way it's meant to be experienced. Ribbed Elliptical Surround

The patented Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds that encircle Energy's products' woofers are unlike any other. By changing the shape of the speaker surround to an ellipse, rather than the traditional "half roll," distortion is reduced dramatically. Side benefits include increased excursion and larger piston area, allowing for greater efficiency. Energy's cast basket woofers also feature this technology, allowing the surround to stretch and contract as it moves, eliminating dimpling.

Low-Pass Filter and Phase Controls

The low-pass filter control allows for the adjustment of the low-pass filter. Adjustments can infinitely be made from 40Hz to 150Hz. This will determine the highest frequency that the subwoofer will reproduce for a custom sound fitted to your room. Setting the crossover too low will create a gap between the frequency response of the front speakers and that of the subwoofer, while setting the crossover frequency too high will create a doubling of certain frequencies, making the music sound boomy. When using small satellite speakers, the appropriate crossover frequency should be from 90Hz to 150Hz, for the bookshelf speakers 70Hz to 90Hz, and for the large floorstanding speakers 40Hz to 70Hz.

The phase control switch allows for the adjustment of the phase of the subwoofer, in relation to the speakers used in your system, from 0 to 180 degrees, to give your home theater system the right balance. This control ensures that the subwoofer operates in phase with the rest of the system, as an out of phase subwoofer will either sound like it is lacking in bass performance or that its timing is off. This setting will be determined by your listening position, the characteristics of your listening room and its interaction with your Energy subwoofer.

Selectable Auto Power Switch

The power switch can be set to either On, Off or Auto. If the switch is in the Off position, the subwoofer will not power up. If the switch is in the On position, it will constantly remain on. If the switch is set to the Auto position, when a signal is present the subwoofer will turn on and will automatically turn off several minutes after a signal is no longer present.

Blue LED Power Status

The LED found on the front panel will illuminate in blue when the subwoofer in functioning. If the unit is in Auto mode and is not receiving a signal, the light will remain off.

This is just the right size to add bass without creating a muddy woofy sound that ruins the clarity of the music.

I am a sound engineer and wanted something for my screening room that was tiny but had low distortion. This speaker filled the bill. There are adequate controls to properly set up the sound field for perfect Dolby, DTS, or SDDS sound tracks. The eliptical suspension for the cone does make a difference when reproducing LFE from Dolby tracks. The small size is perfect for a small room, like a home living room. It powers up automatically and has a bright blue indicator showing it is ON. I suggest covering it to avoid distraction from your screen.

Of course I took it apart to inspect the internals, and it is on the well made side as far as consumer goods goes. I did not need to increase cooling or rework the DC supply for ripple. It was fine out of the box.

This is a great little sub. I bought a decent pair of bookshelves that really lacked in the low end. Once I got this sub working with my system, it added a ton of fullness to the sound. If I stand back and close my eyes, my little bookshelves can almost pass for a full range tower. The sub is also pretty accurate compared to other budget subs. It does more than thump. Keep in mind, this is just an 8 inch driver with 240 watts (peak). It will add fullness and give some clean low end, but it will not work miracles. If you want to loosen your foundation you need to be looking for at least 200-300 watts (rms) and a 10-12 inch driver. For what I needed, this sub fit the bill perfectly. It has good sound, solid feel, and even got my wife's approval on looks!

I purchased these to complement a pair of Energy CB-5 Bookshelf Speakers (Pair,Black) in hopes of getting a low profile but powerful system for my family room (15' x 21' cathedral ceilings). They are hooked up to a Marantz NR1601 Audio Video Receiver (Black), on which I use a DVR and PS3 (all connected via high speed HDMI).

I was worried these would be too small for my family room but that proved to be false. I love this subwoofer. For it's size, it puts out some serious bass. Depending on the level I set, you can feel the rumble in the whole house with very deep and clean bass. I don't think they can compete with a 15-inch Velodyne (it's not going to bring the house down around you) but if you are looking for a small subwoofer that pumps out clean/powerful bass then go for it.

I've used it for watching movies via the DVR, playing FPS games on the PS3, and pumping anything from a Bass Addict CD to classical music through it. All of it sounded awesome. When cranked, it sounds like a movie theater in my house to a point where I'm afraid to turn it up any higher less I get a visit from my neighbors.

I have no complaints or buyers remorse about getting these.

Very high quality, very clean/powerful bass, and small form factor. Sweeeeeeeeet.....

I purchased this subwoofer to be part of my home entertainment system. Last year I picked up a pair of Energy CF-30 Floorstanding/Tower Speaker (Black), Each. I was using these tower speakers alone in a stereo configuration until I was able to expand my system to it's fuller potential. Those tower speakers did a great job, but alone were just adequate, though they do a fantastic job of what they are designed to do - midrange and high range sound.

This year I added this subwoofer and a Energy CC-5 Center Channel Speaker (Black) to my system. There are also some smaller wall-mounted speakers that were in the house when we moved in that I also hooked up. The core of my system is a Sony STR-DH510 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver.

The room that houses our entertainment system is perhaps 12' x 18' with the TV and speakers facing the long axis of the room.

I decided to try the system out with a DVD of the movie Tron: Legacy, and MAN, that was SWEET! The subwoofer really made the place rumble. You know, that sensation where you actually feel the low rumbles and deep sounds in your chest rather than hear them.

I am a fan of Energy speakers! I also very much like the fact that they are made in Canada, and not in China, like just about everything else these days.

I have a Denon unit with 7.1 sound system
After doing a lot of Research , like reading reviews and going to audio stores and checking out all the Subwoofers they had on display, I found this Energy woofer was the best choice for the Money
Its not going to blow you out of your seat, but you will find It to be very crisp and punchy, not muddy at all I can crank it up and It never gets distorted

You want a sub to blend well with your Sat speakers not over power them

In short, In the 50 to 200 price range, you will not find a better deal
Energy makes a great Sub woofer, and speakers as well
