From the Inside Flap

What is the single most important factor that distinguishes the great leaders from the rest? Which personal quality is most likely to inspire confidence in customers, respect among colleagues, and loyalty from employees? Which aspect of your leadership style should you focus on to put your performance, your career, and your life on the fast track to success?

The answer to all of these questions is a single word: Energy. But, you need to know how to control energy to make it work for, not against, you.

In Energy Leadership, renowned coach Bruce D Schneider shows you why the way you use your energy will determine whether or not your organization thrives. He helps you become more aware of your personal power, both in the workplace and in the world at large. And, he shows you how to become a powerful leader, one who motivates others to reach their true potential.

Following the Energy Leadership program, you'll learn how to recognize the seven distinct levels of energy that are the key to understanding why everyone thinks and acts the way they do. You'll learn how to distinguish truly effective leaders from those who deplete the energy of the people around them and specific techniques you can use to shift the energy levels of the people around you to inspire peak performance.

You'll also become familiar with the Big Four Energy Blocks, learn how to recognize them in yourself and others, and discover proven tools and strategies for overcoming these and other obstacles to success.

If you always try to inspire others but sometimes feel like something's missing, something is. Energy Leadership puts you in touch with the missing link between your ambitions and your ability to achieve them.

Throughout my education, including my MBA, teachers used case studies to demonstrate how visionaries and leaders transformed their small organizations into successful businesses, or failed to recognize their weaknesses that led to the downfall of their corporation. Energy Leadership not only provides this standard perspective, but provides insight into how any entrepreneur can motivate themselves to become the best possible leader.

I use this knowledge every day while running my own company, and in all of my personal relationships.

Energy Leadership goes way beyond lessons to help you be a better leader in the workplace. For me, it captured my imagination and opened my mind to exploring a new way of being and showing up in life - both at work and everywhere. The seven levels of energy that exist within us and how they show up and affect our lives masterfully unfolds through a fascinating story. The book provoked a number of Ahah moments and a greater understanding of my own energy, where it was stuck and what can happen when I choose to get unstuck. It is chock full of lessons for living a purposeful and passionate life. I highly recommend it!

Energy Leadership is a parable about the role human energy plays in the dynamics and turnaround of a small company called O'Connell Consulting that faces declining sales and internal morale. As we know, energy is the fundamental force of nature that makes up everything in the universe. The book focuses on the mental, social, psychological, and physical energy we embody every day. It is how we show up at work and at home. According to Energy Leadership, the degree to which we tap into and use our energy drives the outcomes we experience.

A multimedia work, Energy Leadership contains links to online videos that use an interview format to describe in more detail some of the most important concepts in the book. The videos offer a useful adjunct to the book's text. The book also includes online resources, documents and graphics to illustrate the text and videos.

As an executive coach some of the ideas I found most useful include:
1. Life offers neither problems nor challenges, only solutions.
2. Answers to all of life's questions lie within.
3. Each moment describes who you are and gives you the opportunity to decide if that's who you want to be.
4. The greatest freedom is freedom of choice.
5. Detached involvement--the most challenging principle. Few leaders are able to completely use their full genius. Being totally engaged, intellectually and emotionally, and remaining objective and detached from judgment, enables true power and potential to be unlocked.

Core Energy Techniques
Useful for managing others...
Validation. Helps the person feel that he or she has been heard and has a right to feel whatever emotions she or he feels.
Request action. There's always a choice. Ask for the right action.

I agree with all the other reviews, this is a nice model for building personal and professional energy and leadership skills. I wrote a ten page review on it for a doctoral level leadership class, so I did an extensive study of the book and accompanying videos. The more you review, the more you get out of it. My main criticism is that there was too much time spent on the lower energy levels and basic leadership skills. I like the quotations from renowned leaders at the beginning of each chapter that described the content. The Energy Self Perception Chart is pretty cool, especially once you grasp all the concepts, like a chakra chart. After reading the book and doing the review, I find myself more observant of how I'm relating and shifting to higher levels, when I used to get stuck at Level 2 alot-conflict. The website has alot of good info in addition to products and services for sale like seminars and coaching services. The centering cd's were a little pricey $40 but you get four of them, have other relaxation/visualization cd's I will use. Overall an easy read, not too long, story a bit hokey at times but motivating. Would like to hear about Schneider's work with healthcare systems, not sure if he's done that type of work. Most testimonials were from individuals and business groups.

I recommend Energy Leadership by Bruce D. Schneider. This is an excellent book about a business owner who brings his company from the brink of bankruptcy to transformative success. I really enjoyed this book because, for me, it is actually about spirituality. While you may not think of it this way, our spirituality is expressed mostly when we are engaged in the activities of our daily lives.

What can be more engaging than the mundane process of everyday business life? I invite you to broaden your perspective of business to include, for example, what a parent has to do to get their child off to school with lunch and motivate him or her to do homework and chores when they get home; or what it takes for a single person to open their eyes in the morning, get up, go out and face the day of work or school with all of the activities scheduled to be faced on that day.

In all cases, this represents leadership, and I am asserting that the task before us is to discover what is spiritual in every activity we face. Bruce shows us how to empower ourselves, to raise our level of consciousness and thereby discover that spiritual content in every moment. I hope you will take that journey and read Bruce D. Schneider's Energy Leadership!
