Knowledge is power July 16, 2009

I just started using the EM100. I opted for the EM100 over the Killawatt model. It was a few bucks more seemed to have more available information on the display simultaneous. You can enter in your average cost per KW-Hour and it can show you a cumulative dollar amount.

I recently built 2 new semi-high end PCs and was curious as to their actual power usage. A 1.4 KVA UPS, 2 x quad core PCs , network kit and other typical PC accessories. All running with 100% cpu load is about 475 watts. Now I know this. I don't need to guess. The A/C in the same office uses only 50/80 watts with fan only (low/high) . Power usage goes up additional 400 watts when the compressor is engaged.

I have a few dim-able ballast florescent lamps as well. I found that they use as low as 13 watts on the lowest , and 55w at the max. What was interesting is that if I set the dimmer down to where there is 95% ( eye ball calibrated ) light output compared to max, uses only 30 watts.

This product is a neat little gadget to have. It is very simple to use. It provides real time and peak power usage of any device ( or power strip ) that you plug in through it. Next I will see about my fridge and TV/stereo. I am curious how much juice things really do use when they are in standby/off.

Get one. Its simple and does what it says it does.

Even though next to my name it says "Upset in Detroit", I am not upset (that is misleading from the part of Amazon just because I picked two stars) and I do not know how to change it.
I bought this item because I thought that it would be interesting to see the money spent by certain electronic devices even when they are not being used at all. Most of the features work but the watt read does not. It keeps constantly jumping ( I have it in front of me, it is monitoring my computer) 48W -7W-46W-9W every 1 second and I have no idea why. If I put the display to read current the current is not changing at all but the watts do. Something is not right. To be fair I have not contacted the manufacturer, but I think that I will return it and buy the more simpler one.

Update June 18, 2009. I just received the replacement from the seller. It works as advertised. Before I returned the defective unit I talked to the manufacturer and they immediately told me that the unit was defective and that I need to send it back to the seller. I contacted the seller and they gave me an RMA number. Within minutes it was in my inbox so I sent it out the next day. It took over to two weeks to get there and 1 week to get the replacement back. Besides the use of snail mail at the cheapest rate (I think that I could have walked the item and back home faster than the post office took to deliver) I am very happy with the seller and with the product. I cannot change the star rating, but I now give it 5 stars.

cheap but works July 26, 2009

The product is not high quality but it works. Although, I question the accuracy of it sometimes. However, it is good enough to get the work done (find those appliances hogs.)
