The Energy Pirate: A review by Francis A. Andrew, Zarqa, JORDAN., June 18, 2010
This review is from: The Energy Pirate (Paperback)
"The Energy Pirate" by Fred and Geoffrey Hoyle is a short Ladybird children's science fiction story. Like another story in the series ( The Giants of Universal Park ), "The Energy Pirate" features the mysterious Professor Gamma, his daughter Kiryl and her friend William.
The story centres around the theft of Earth's sugar by Professor Gamma's old friend named Zuchario. William is deprived of his weekly Neutron Chocolate Bar due to the theft of the sugar, and so he, along with Professor Gamma and Kirly set out to find what is at the bottom of these bizarre goings-on.
Even in this short little Ladybird Book story, something of the science fact can be gleaned if one looks and thinks hard enough. Professor Gamma's pipe has the astonishing ability to dematerialise people and transport them through the energy pathways of the Universe. This is somewhat reminiscent of "worms" which many scientists believe may exist in the Universe and which have time and space bending properties thus enabling travel through the cosmos in literally no time at all! Zuchario's insatiable need for sugar as a source of power brings to mind the current energy crisis and the need to search for an alternative to fossil fuel.
At the end of the story, the three heroes succeed in putting an end to Zuchario's escapade, and so, the Earth's sugar - and thus its life - is saved from annihilation. On top of all of this, William gets his Neutron Chocolate Bar, which he discovers has the unbelievable quality of renewing itself. In future, it may not be beyond the means of science to find ways of getting the right atoms in the right combination at the right time and place so that children may be presented with what must be their ultimate dream - a re-chargeable chocolate bar!
