The Energy RC-10's are just fantastic, google the Soundstage review online and it is right on the money. Unbelievably smooth tweeter (if you are coming from cheap speakers, the tweeter is so smooth you might think something is wrong with the speaker at first, because you've never heard treble that wasn't harsh and glaring before!!), and shocking bass for the size (the specs do not lie, I've measured strong response down below 50Hz in my room). If you can find the real wood veneers (rosenut/cherry) don't settle for the tacky black ash, the wood veneers are STUNNING and will put your furniture to shame.

For this review, I would like to concentrate on the so-called "break in period" for these little beauties; the previous reviewers comments on amazing bass, clarity and smooth tweeter response all still apply - they really are a RIDICULOUS BUY for $200.00: If I had to do it all over again, I would buy these for my entire HT system and pair with a tasty sub - and that would be that - it would be done.

Anyway, I would like to speak of the "break in"....first off - IT IS REAL. While I do not understand the physics of the break in period, I can attest to the fact that it is real, and astonishing. Energy calls for 100 hours of break in, and I believe them....when I first hooked them up, I was underwhelmed at the quality; it was like listening to a speaker that had gauze all over the front...after about 10 hours they got better; I would call them "listenable" at this stage. The speakers then kind of went through a plateau stage, where I was almost convinced to box them back up and send them back...I left for a weekend, and let them play (Bartok, Barber, Mahler). When I came back I was convinced someone had broken in to my house, stolen these speaker and replaced them with another pair - it was that different- clear, airy highs, deep bass....wow.

Hook em up, leave for the weekend, come back and be amazed. Buy them. Now.

I noticed that these speakers did not have a review on Amazon so I decided to write one, my RC 10's I actually got off of e-bay and I was able to get the Cherry veneer which made them more attractive to me and desirable...if I were to buy only the plain ash model I might be temped to just get the Energy CB 20 for less money or pay a little more and get the V 5.1 in Rosenut...I would also like to say that I think the sound quality that is available today in speakers that cost under $600 a pair is incredible, most of the sound improvements that have taken place in the last few years have been in this class speaker, incredible sounding speakers have always been available for those willing to pay over $1000 a pair but to be able to get a pair at this quality for around $300 is amazing....
I have mixed feelings about these speakers, they are very neutral sounding, some what laid back, understated not just the tweeter either but the whole sound from top to bottom, so they might not be for everyone...they sound extremely good with classical music, creating a wide open sound stage, and easy to place instruments with in the sound stage... I thought they also sound good with Heavy Metal, I find Heavy metal extremely fatiguing with cheap speakers and I cannot listen to it, but I was able to get though a whole CD of Queensryche with enjoyment and no fatigue...the weakness of these speakers lies with some Black Artist Music, for me it was Erma Thomas..her band tends to use a slam beat to create a soundstage presence, I felt that this was diminished somewhat and therefore made her soundstage presence smaller...I've noticed this with other black artists as well they also tend to use a slam beat more especially on live recordings to create presence...

Verified Purchase
Bought these when Vanns had them on sale. Currently using them as rear surrounds. Very attractive solid speaker. Provide a clear sound. I tried these as front speakers to see what they sounded like. I have the RC50's now, but these would be an excellent choice as front speakers as well. More than enough power to fill a room with sound. Bass is incredible...especially for the speaker size. I've only experienced using Energy brand speakers for my home theater. These definitely stand out from the other models that I've heard so far.

I've had these speakers for about 4 years now, but I still get as excited to listen to them as I did the day I bought them. I listen to a range of music including jazz, classic rock, grunge rock, hip hop, international music, etc. These speakers sound beautiful across all of them, though I think my favorite is acoustic guitar. Assuming you have good source quality and amp, you can hear the twang of the strings and the fingers move across the strings with these speakers. They seem very balanced and accurate throughout the frequency range, not overly bright, or muddled, or boomy. I highly recommend these speakers to anyone who is a music lover.

For information, I bi-amp these speakers from an Onkyo SR606 amp, and pair them with the Energy ESW-C8 subwoofer. I've run these speakers without the tweeter/mid amped separately, and I can definitely notice a difference when bi-amped. The mids/lows sound pretty similar bi-amped, but the highs are a bit clearer. My room is about 1500 cu-ft. I've used these speakers in larger rooms as well, and they do fine (though the ESW-C8 subwoofer doesn't do well in a much bigger room).

Long story short, if you're debating on getting these speakers, I'd say go for it. If your receiver has a bi-amp option, use it! Just don't play low bitrate mp3s through them and expect magic; I'd recommend playing CDs, or playing lossless if you're going the digital route.
