4.0 out of 5 stars Why,oh why Dalida?, July 10, 2001

This review is from: Enfants Du Piree 4 (Audio CD)
This CD follows Dalida's adventures in world of french pop and its somehow worlds away from her beautiful first CD collection "Bambino" from 1956.Where her begginings were lush and orchestrated ballads about Portugal,Fado,Flamenco,Spanish guitars and little Bambinos, here the accent is more on then-contemporary pop as she obviously wanted to sound more "modern".The highlight of her recordings in 1960. is "Les Enfants Du Piree" which suits her voice absolutely perfect. Her take on "Tintarella Di Luna" was the first time (but not the last!) she took a song from italian singer Mina."O Sole Mio" and "Save the last Dance For Me" sound wonderful in her intepretation,as four ultra-rare Christmas songs from a Christmas single. And then we have incredible "Itsy Bitsy Petit Bikini" which in my opinion should never been recorded by her - having this silly novelty song on the same CD with Christmas songs and soaring "O Sole mio" just make it more painful.Dalida was obviously gifted singer who could tackle absolutely any material but in this case her voice was wasted on inferior song and it was made with a big bang, you can't go worst than this. It's a long way from "La Violetera" to "Itsy Bitsy Petit Bikini" and I'm not sure was it excatly a progress.

Another review led me to try this CD out. I am glad I did. The sound is crisp and clear with some classic dated oldies, VERY Connie Francis, South American, and European 1960 styles!! In Dalidas deep beautiful voice you have "Save the last dance for me", the Brazilian rhythms of "S'endormir comme d'habitude", the Greek and Italian rhythms of "Les enfants du piree", "C'est un jour 'a Naples" & "O sole mio", plus "Itsy Bitsy teenie weenie bikini". But the price of the CD alone is worth hearing her sing "Silent night", "White Xmas" and "Jingle Bells". (In french of course but sung in the standard way and absolutely beautiful!)
