Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Provides realistic scenarios that encourage ethical behavior among police or corrections officers. Presents fifty real-life scenarios in "Ethical Encounters" which ask the best means of handling the situation and resolving the matter ethically. Provides fifty challenging ethical questions in "Points to Ponder" that prepare readers for the "Ethical Encounters" section. For example, a question might ask, "Would you follow a direct order from a supervisor if you believed the order was unethical or inappropriate?" Presents issues in "Contributing Factors" that contribute to why an officer may behave inappropriately. This gives the reader an overview enabling them to understand why officers may act unethically. An essential reference for every police officer and supervisor as well as every citizen concerned with ethical police behavior.

This review is from: Enforcing Ethics: A Scenario-Based Workbook for Police and Corrections Recruits and Officers (Paperback)
I took a Michigan State Police Exam, and interviewed with the US Customs Service for an internship after reading this book. As far as the US Customs interview went, this book was invaluable. For the MSP exam it was also extremely helpful because the entire exam was scenario based. It is an excellent tool for people who are trying to obtain a law enforcement mindset. Most of the scenario's are only common sense police scenario's, but the book let's you determine what you'd do in a situation, and compare it with what is expected in the back of the book. It also tells you why you should've answered the question differently. I'm a Junior year Criminal Justice major, and this book has helped me a lot. Most law enforcement agencies now only give you scenario type questions that everyone thinks there really is no wrong or right answer to. You could answer all of the questions wrong, and leave the interview feeling like you did well. This book will help to prevent that. It will help you to develop a pattern of doing what is best in high stress scneario's. In an interview, you will be able to not only answer questions, but stick to the answers and explain them because you know there's not a better one.
