3.0 out of 5 stars They copied 311, Now they want to copy POD
This cd is ok. I have mixed feelings about it. The sound is different. Daves voice got a little deeper in this one, and the music got a little heavier. He sings more than raps in this one, but its nothing to lose sleep over.

Josh Auers bass work is phenomenal on this album. I cant believe how complex his notation, chords, and rhythms are, and at his young age! Wow! On...

This album really does flow well, combining energetic guitar work, original bass lines, superb fat grooves and the vocals are unbelievable in my eyes. although rap/rock is longer as popular, the vocals on this cd mix up singing with nice flowing rhymes. not to mention positive lyrics of such quality i havent heard for quite some time in christian/secular band.
standout songs would Engage, Voices, I'll See you (my fav), Move On This, Yesterday. I have to mention the song What Is Love because of the subject matter, which has lead singer Dave writing about the man who molested his now wife in the past. What follows is very haunting and displays the realities of sad situations such as this.
All this said, this cd has something for everyone, especially if u enjoy bands such as 311, or any reggae/energetic rock styles.

this is the perfect cd to listen to at any time while you're studying, working out, cruisin around, or just chillin out. the reason is because there is something for everybody on the album from hard rock to easy listening and the tunes are really catchy. my favorite songs are the title cut, voices and psa. but my #1 favorite is tonight. but every song on the album is really cool. you should really check this out.

3.0 out of 5 stars They copied 311, Now they want to copy POD, February 20, 2004

Wow! On the reggae and rap tunes, he takes the spotlight in my opinion. Keep up the good work josh!

The drums are well different, in a bad way. Skwid was a better drummer as far as talent goes. He had style, with complex beats, ghost notes, and his drumset was a jazz-style drumset, which has a higher pitched, tighter sound. Joey plays very simplistic beats. Although he sounds cool in the songs, he probably doesnt have a mastery of the drumset like skwid did. He is more of a hardcore drummer, becuase he likes to bang and pound louder than skwid, and his drums are very heavy and low pitched. This sounds ok for the rockers, but on the reggae, rap, and funk songs, the drums sound horrible and out of place (because of their heavy sound)

Bobbito is like the best non-black rapper I have ever heard. His turntables are nothing to overlook either. For once, there is a rap/rock band that can actually sound like contemporary rap, instead of regurgitating will smith-like rhymes that newer rap fans cant enjoy. Listen to the song "PSA" Now that is some REAL rap/rock.
Hard rockers, and Jesse impresses me with his guitar work once again. I swear his reggae riffs are trippy, and they rock! More reggae than I expected, which is good, because it shows they wont diss it like POD did. Where's da funk? no pure funk songs on here, but theres the occasional funk guitar in some songs.

The cd itself is half good and half bad. The sound quality is messier on this one than on their debut. The first 6 songs are great, but after that, the songs get repetitive and not as good songs, which makes for a bad cd. I think they tried to go too mainstream with this one. I liked their debut much better. Back then they emulated the rock/rap/reggae style of 311. They still mix rap/roc/reggae/funk but less 311 style and more POD style, which I dont like too much. Hopefully, they wont take the same route and shed off their creative rap, reggae, and funk influences and start playing nothing but fast rockers that all sound the same.

I can only hope for better in the future. Maybe they will go back to "Twoseventeen mode" and make some diverse music again. Bands need to be original, this cd wasnt doing that.

If you're expecting exactly what you heard on the first album, don't. At first I was somewhat disappointed because some of the sounds were different. But I gave it another listen, and another...and another. Basically, it's the only thing that's played in my car since I got it three weeks ago. Pax217 is an awesome band, and I've been waiting for this CD for two years. It's truly a great album and if you like mainstream acts like Incubus or Linkin Park, then you'll definitely enjoy these guys. If given the chance, I think they would break through and rock the mainstream music industry. BTW...these guys need to come back to Columbus, GA so I can see you play!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow..., January 2, 2003

This is truly an excellent cd! I liked their first one, sure, but it was lacking something. This cd picked up what they were lacking and brought it all together and just made it awesome! I especially like "What is Love" (no. 10) and "Melody" (no. 9). What is Love is definitely my favorite. It has a very good message and sounds awesome. When I fisrt listenned to the cd, I didn't even really listen to it, and then it came to 10, and I was wondering if it was really them because it was just so different... In any case, excellent cd! Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Might Just Be My New Favorite Album of the Year, July 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Engage (Audio CD)
I got this CD a few weeks before it came out, and I just have to say that it's easily one of the best albums that I've listened to this year. Initially, when I put in the CD, I wasn't really all that excited about it, but then It blew me away with the opening. These guys have seriously progressed as artists. I know a few people have been complaining that they don't like Joey's style on the drums as much as they like Skwid's, but I think it's just a matter of taste. They are both accomplished artists and they have unique styles. The band benefits. At first my favorite song was tonight, but after a considerable amount of listening, I think that songs number 7 and number 10 could be some serious contenders for grammies. This album touched me not just on an emotional level but on a spiritual level as well. God has given this band a message to deliver, and they do, song, after song, after song. If your looking for something catchy, buy this album, if your looking for something meaningful, buy this album, if your looking for something innovative, buy this album, if your looking, period, buy this album.

This Cd has become a new favorite and since I got it on tuesday, I have been listening to it straight through. I loved PAX217's self titled CD back in the day, but Pax has seemed to imporve their "tightness" when playing together and are very comfortable on this album. TO explain it easy, its soemthing you can listen to and just move wiht, its hard, its musical, its sweet. FInd it wherever you can and get it whereever you can, and try to see them live cause in myopion, these guys are on the same level of talent with guys like POD and Incubus man. GOd Bless, rock on.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Engage" Your Rhythmic Inclination, May 22, 2002
By
JAder (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Engage (Audio CD)
Breaking through the walls of Christian Contemporary, with intriguing vocals, powerful guitar rifts, strong baselines, bold drum beats, and a turn table mix to rival any rap album to date, "Engage" grabs hold and rides the power of contemporary music as far as God can take it. Just one listen will fill your veins with the rhythm that is Pax 217 and you will wonder what your ears had been listening to before. You will jump, dance, and sing along with the pulsation emanating from your speakers. You may even reel at the power of the rhythm and words of a song that looks at rape from the perspective of the Victim's future Christian lover. "Engage" your mind in the rhythm revolution that is Pax 217.
