Classic Humpy, but why only 12 songs?,
By Arto S. (Helsinki, Finland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Engelbert Humperdinck: Greatest Performances 1967 - 1977 (DVD)
This is a very enjoyable DVD collection featuring some of Engelbert Humperdinck's biggest hits as he originally performed them in his TV show around 1969-1970. He was at the peak of his vocal power and he delivers the hits with fantastic intensity. The remastered sound with DTS is very good and it actually adds something extra, but the film at times shows the limitations of the era in which it was made. The songs are placed around a recent interview with Engelbert, in which he reflects the old times with a wink in his eye.Too bad, though, that we don't get to see the TV shows in their entirety and out of Engelbert's extensive catalog only 12 songs are featured here. They are 01: Release Me 02: Last Waltz 03: Man Without Love 04: Am I That Easy To Forget 05: There Goes My Everything 06: Les Bicyclettes De Belsize 07: Quando Quando Quando 08: Winter World Of Love 09: Spanish Eyes 10: Love Me With All Of Your Heart 11: I'm A Better Man 12: After The Lovin' There may be legal reasons relating to copywrights or record company contracts, who knows, but as much as I enjoy these familiar songs, I would really like to have seen a far more extensive collection of his early performances. This is all five-star material but I have to drop one star from my rating of the DVD because of its short content of only about 60 minutes. There must be dozens of clips out there of some of the less obvious but still stellar songs which he has recorded and covered over the years. I'm thinking great tunes from his first albums like Take My Heart, Long Gone, Love Can Fly, A Good Thing Going, Call On Me, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Sweetheart, We Made It Happen, Nashville Lady, Revivin'Old Emotions etc., just to mention a few. In addition to his most familiar hits, Engelbert Humperdinck has recorded (and I'm sure at least some them have also been filmed) many truly great songs that would deserve to be re-realeased in DVD format, if possible. A box-set, including all the great songs and filmed performances which were not necessarily his biggest hits but are of lasting quality still the same, would be a thrill to a life-long fan like myself. This product, Engelbert Humperdinck: The Greatest Performances 1967-1977, is a great trip down memory lane, but it is just a tease, I want more!

This is the classic Engelbert "then and now", his very beginning, with him "now" talking about "then". What a treasure.

may not play on some dvd players,
This review is from: Engelbert Humperdinck: Greatest Performances 1967 - 1977 (DVD)
After receiving the dvd i loaded it into my dvd player and a message came up on my dvd player "unable to play".So i removed the dvd and loaded it into a back up dvd player in my system and the same thing happened. It would not play the dvd. Then it dawned on me.Since there was a label on the case that said it was manufactured in england it might have a differant region code than the one in the united states. So i took the dvd and put it in a third dvd player,a late model J.V.C.equipped to handle all region coded dvds and it played perfectly.Don't know if all the dvds shipped from england are like this or not.All region players will have no trouble playing the dvd.I loved the dvd.It was nice to see the very young Engelbert back in the old days as i remember seeing him in person pouring his heart out on the songs he made so famous.

This review is from: Engelbert Humperdinck: Greatest Performances 1967 - 1977 (DVD)
The disc does not work on any of my CD or DVD players. I do not have the address of the person who sent it and I need to send it back and get credit for it. It was in great shape, no damage to packaging, but it does not work and I only get an "error" message when I try to play it.

I have an all region DVD player, but fan club members I ordered this DVD for do not. Consequently, they wish to return them. When I ordered for them on Amazon US, I expected them to be a format that would work on DVD players here in the US.I ordered mine earlier from Amazon UK. Please send me a phone #, so I can take care of the returns. Also, advise when I can order a version my fan club members can play. Anne Bishop

The eagle continues to soar,

I received this video yesterday. I tried it in my dvd player and it didn't play. Then I tried it in my computer on windows media player and it worked just great. What a treat to watch the older and mature Enge reminisce about his beginnings and the songs that made him what he is today. It was great to see him watch and critique himself singing "Release Me." There is no entertainer that can top Enge. Only an Eagle {Arnold means eagle} can reach and maintain such heights and continue to soar with such grace. May he continue to find the currents beneath his wings.

THE BEST MEMORIES FOR ALL ENGELBERT FANS,

This review is from: Engelbert Humperdinck: Greatest Performances 1967 - 1977 (DVD)
I have enjoyed this video so much. To hear Engelbert talk about the early years and then watch the video was a walk down memory lane. The last video and probably most touching was Engelbert watching himself singing Release Me forty years ago, he critics himself and his wonderfull sense of humor comes thru and you can see his emotions clearly. For all Engelbert fans a must have. I recently saw Engelbert in concert and he uses some of these videos in the begining of his show, now I can watch them whenever I want and enjoy them over and over.
