Engine Builder's Handbook,
By Howard W Hilshorst (Britt, Minnesota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Engine Builder's Handbook (Paperback)
Having rebuilt three of my own engines over the last year, I was looking for hints and tips to improve my results and to raise my skill level. From the very beginning of the book, Monroe's attention to detail and common sense approach has done just that for me. This book is worth reading by anyone who has an interest in engines and rereading before any engine rebuild. I highly recommend it.

THIS IS A BOOK THAT CAN BE REREAD MANY TIMES. THE AUTHOR KNOWS OF WHAT HE SPEAKS. THE MATERIAL IS VERY COMPLETE. I LEARN SOMETHING EVERY TIME I REFER TO THIS BOOK. HAVING ATTENDED NUMEROUS SEMINARS AND SCHOOLS ON ENGINE BUILDING I USE THIS BOOK CONSTANTLY.

The ideal engine rebuilders book at a bargain price.,

After I had read both books on Nissan engines by this author I bought this book too. This book is set out so you can diagnose faults first to determine if you need to rebuild or not. Then it goes into engine teardown in detail. It describes the rebuilding process. The cylinder heads are covered in a separate chapter which the author explains.
For anyone who loves working on cars this book is ideal. Its written so most people will understand it.There are plenty of photos throughout with explanations. This book is like your best friend guiding you through the whole process. This book is a gem and a bargain.Make this the first book you consider on engine rebuilding. The book was written to give guidance on all engines not just V8's.A must have book.

This is a very good book and the further I read into it the more excited it became. The amount of detail inspires, and for anyone that bleeds 40 weight, this book is a library must add.

Having built several motors for my cars and helping a few friends (each) build a few motors, it was good to just solidify what I knew, and double check those "I thought so" things. I mean you won't learn 20 years worth of experience from any book, but this one is well written and kinda lets you know when you are leaving some horses out on the bench.

Okay, I've built more than a few engines, but I picked up this book since it's been a while, just to see what's up. But, really, there's only so many things that can change. But if you've never built an engine, this is THE book you have to start with. Mr. Monroe assumes that you know what an engine is, but beyond that everything is explained in detail. Tear down, cleaning, picking parts. There are excellent sidebars on things like calculating compression ratios, how to balance a rotating assembly, lapping valves, etc. If the last sentence only makes a little sense to you, you need to read this book.
For me, it's just a little review. But for starters, it's an important book in your library.

a great book for the first time engine builder. this book breaks down engine rebuilding system by system and gives you a solid foundation on engine rebuilding. the author covers valvetrain components and function in depth including a chapter on camshaft theory. the book for some reason doesnt cover induction systems all that well, however its still a must have book

If you have ever needed some extra help understanding how to perform a technical task which gets 1 line in a car repair manual, this book will help you when dealing with engines. Well written, understandable, good value.
