Summarizing the history and basic concepts of finite elements in a manner easily understood by all engineers, this concise reference describes specific finite element software applications to structural, thermal, electromagnetic and fluid analysis - detailing the latest developments in design optimization, finite element model building and results processing and future trends.;Requiring no previous knowledge of finite elements analysis, the Second Edition provides new material on: p elements; iterative solvers; design optimization; dynamic open boundary finite elements; electric circuits coupled to finite elements; anisotropic and complex materials; electromagnetic eigenvalues; and automated pre- and post-processing software.;Containing more than 120 tables and computer-drawn illustrations - and including two full-colour plates - What Every Engineer Should Know About Finite Element Analysis should be of use to engineers, engineering students and other professionals involved with product design or analysis.

Editorial Reviews

Review

. . .a good book and helps a general engineer appreciate the finite-element methods and provides guidelines for proper application of the method.
---Journal of the Indian Institute of Science
Unlike many books that present in great detail the mathematical theory behind finite element computer programs, this book emphasizes how such programs are applied. . . . . .extremely useful to engineers and researchers, who use finite element for design analysis and to professors who teach finite element methods. . .strongly recommended for purchase by individuals and libraries.
---Drying Technology

More About the Author

You are invited to watch a video of the author discussing this book and showing a few magnetic actuators and sensors at his website http://johnrbrauer.com. (Click on the link in the upper right corner of the main page.) He was born in Wisconsin (USA) and earned three degrees in electrical engineering: a bachelor's from Marquette University and a master's and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1969 he began performing engineering research for A. O. Smith Corporation, then for the MacNeal-Schwendler Corporation (now MSC Software), and followed by Ansoft Corporation (now a subsidiary of Ansys Inc). In 1998 he joined Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, WI, where he is now Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has published over 150 papers, most concerned with finite element analysis of electromagnetic devices. He has enjoyed membership in the IEEE for over 40 years, and was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1995 for contributions to finite element analysis of electromagnetic devices. He has served on the boards of the International Compumag Society and the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society. He enjoys sharing knowledge with other engineers around the world.
