Book Description

June 29, 2006 0073402451 978-0073402451 3
This revision of Kelley's Pro/ENGINEER features the many user-friendly enhancements of the new version of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0, while continuing with the strong pedagogical framework and tutorials that have made the previous editions so successful. The text is designed to serve as a tutorial, reference, and lecture guide, and is appropriate as a course text or self-paced independent study guide. Chapters start by covering selected topics in moderate detail, followed by one or more tutorials covering the chapter's objectives and topics. At the end of each chapter, practice problems are used to reinforce concepts covered in the chapter and previously in the book. An accompanying website features solutions for instructors as well as ancillary materials for reading and download.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inaccuracies w/r to Wildfire Release 2.0, June 30, 2005
By
Steven K. Rody "srody" (Knox, Indiana United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book explains the mechanics of how to perform basic operations with Wildfire very well, in the first half of the book. However, more complex or higher level operations are sometimes inaccurate, having incorrect or missing steps, or poorly explained in later chapters. This includes some of what the book refers to as advanced drawing and modeling tools. It is quite frustrating to follow the directions given in the text only to find the software does not perform the task as described. In addition, the text gives no clue how to recover from mistakes. Thus, the user is often forced to closeout of the model/drawing completely and start from scratch, or the last save, assuming the application has not locked-up the computer. There is no coverage of sheetmetal modeling techniques, either.

It would appear the author either wrote the book based on an earlier release of Wildfire, or based it on Pro-E 2001. In any case, the GUI's in some cases do not look the same as shown in the text and the selectable choices are not always as described in the book.

Finally, Kelley/McGraw-Hill provide downloadable models and drawings that are useful at the noted website. However, there is no errata, or update posted for the book and no contact for Kelley.

Bottomline: Assuming better alternatives exist, it is a questionable purchase for novices wanting to learn Wildfire 2.0 or later.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book sucks, October 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a terrible book to accompany a terrible program made by terrible people. As you use this book you may notice that there are missing or incorrect steps in every single exercise. This book includes no hints for fixing problems in your drawings, so if you make a mistake you might as well start over. Avoid this book if you possibly can.

3.0 out of 5 stars old version still good, August 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book but just realized it is a very old version. I have done a few tutorials from it and it is very similar to the newest version. Some of the terms are not used anymore but the symbols seem to be the same. And the page numbers line up pretty well. I'm hoping it works out for the rest of the semester.
