This is the first time I ever wrote a book review - engineers do not like to write! But in this case I am making an exception. This is a great book. The book helped me to apply SolidWorks in my job. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good Intermediate Level Book - Lacks Advanced Tutorials
This book is set up well for intermediate level users who have some limited SolidWorks experience. But for users who learn rapidly or are 'crossing over' from other 3D CAD modeling software, this book lacks much that the advanced user needs to know about complex modeling/surfacing. There is not yet a book that addresses this need...

This review is from: Engineering Design with SolidWorks 99 (Paperback)
This is the first time I ever wrote a book review - engineers do not like to write! But in this case I am making an exception. This is a great book. The book helped me to apply SolidWorks in my job. I liked it because I could follow every step. There are numerous pictures to assist the new SolidWorks user like me. The book quickly brought me up to speed on SolidWorks. It made me aware of the various project team issues which need to be addressed in a design environment. It provided real life situations between sales, engineering and manufacturing. This was great. This is the first book I've seen that addressed Top Down assembly. More books should be written this way.

PS - The reproduction quality of the pictures could be improved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, April 18, 2000

Finally, a book that talks about using SolidWorks in a true "Real world engineering environment". The authors definitely understand real world design issues with customers, manufacturing and sales that I face every day! The clear step-by-step instruction made it easy to work through machined parts, plastic parts and sheet metal parts. All projects are presented from the assembly point of view. Great idea! I learned a lot about why parts fail to rebuild and how to correct them. The project on Top Down design using a sheet metal part was great.

5.0 out of 5 stars User of SolidWorks, June 12, 2000

This review is from: Engineering Design with SolidWorks 99 (Paperback)
This is a great book. I would highly recommend this book for all user levels. I agree with the other reviews in that the authors present a clear and precise picture in using SolidWorks with a understanding of the real world. The sample reveiw questions and exercises in the back of each chapter are good. I enjoyed the information in Chapter 6 on Rapid Prototyping files and the Top down design approach in Chapter 7 is awesome.

I am a designer and SolidWorks 99 user. I purchased this book a few weeks ago. The book provides a good step by step learning approach. The examples and siturations are real. I would recommend this book, ( And I did ) to any SolidWorks user. I will purchase the SolidWorks 2000 version when we upgrade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, could be better., July 31, 2001

If you are looking for something to lead you through how to use the program at a basic level step by step this tutorial does it. However, it falls short in explaining why the features function as they do which makes it hard to advance your skills beyond the tutorial. Also the addition of a reference would allow the user when working to expand beyond the book examples to go back and review the pertinent sections.

2.0 out of 5 stars A workbook, NOT a reference book., August 3, 2000

Beware! This is not a reference book for SolidWorks. It is nothing more than a workbook to guide you through some examples. No index hurts. It does not stand alone and is not worth the money in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CAD teaching text I've seen, March 2, 2001
By
Paul Kieffer (Waterbury, CT United States) - See all my reviews
I've been using this book for a year now to teach SolidWorks and it's the best cad teaching book I've seen. It is very much tuned to my teaching style. The step-by-step approach allows students to work at their own pace and understand what they're doing. I usually start a lesson out and then let them work on their own. I help them when they have problems. As with all tutorials, sometimes the detailed instructions don't work out exactly as the book indicates. This is a problem with all texts and has to do with the changes that are constantly being made to CAD software, so that a text may be out of date before it is printed. Overall, I would rate this book very highly in that regard.

5.0 out of 5 stars New User, February 23, 2001
By
I am a new user of SolidWorks. I used Pro/E for over 5 years; "This is my problem". I found this book to be an execellent source of information for the major features of the software. Planchard does an outstanding job in presenting and identifing key feature areas in SolidWorks.

The book is very accurate with it's commands. I wish I had a book like this when I was learning Pro/E. The book needs a few more sample examples. Money well spent!
