Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Rahn's text provides a qualitative description of methods utilized in Engineering Geology. It includes such recent events as the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake as well as the 1993 Mississippi River floods. Case histories and additional worked examples and problems are included to give students a more thorough and current knowledge base from which to learn the principle components of engineering geology.

From the Back Cover

17740-2

This book offers advanced geology students an in-depth, quantitative approach to environmental engineering, with a special emphasis on the recognition and avoidance of geologic hazards. Drawing on real-life examples, the book handles:

  • Rock and soil mechanics, including slope stability and surficial deposits
  • Geophysical issues and earthquake hazards
  • Hydrological concerns, groundwater, and fluvial and coastal processes

More than 100 figures illustrate the concepts, and the author provides over 1,000 references.

This classic textbook has been completely revised and updated to include analyses of recent geologic disasters, including:

  • The Loma Prieta, Northridge, and Kobe earthquakes,
  • Hurricane Andrew
  • The Mississippi floods of 1993.

The first edition of Engineering Geology, released in 1986, has garnered broad praise and numerous awards, including:

The Claire P. Holdredge Award for the best publication of the year, given by the Association of Engineering Geologists in 1987, and The E.B. Burwell, Jr. Award for the best publication of the year, given by the Engineering Geology Division of the Geological Society of America.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Poor Figures, January 23, 2007
This review is from: Engineering Geology: An Environmental Approach (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
This book is well written, covers a wide breadth of information well, and is a valuable reference. It is also has clear, interesting writing. That said, the quality of the typeface, and especially the figures, is so incredibly poor as to render the book painful to read. I can hardly belive how badly executed a modern (1995, 2nd Ed.) volume by a large publisher (Prentice Hall) can be.

This review is from: Engineering Geology: An Environmental Approach (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
A very good book for introductory engineering geology. The author presents the information in an easy to read and understand format. I thoroughly enjoyed the authors use of actual situations and incidents to help the reader understand the concepts, applications and importance of the subject material. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest of attaining a basic understanding of engineering geology.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good text, Terrible Pictures, July 20, 2009
This review is from: Engineering Geology: An Environmental Approach (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I purchased this textbook to use in a college course. The text of the book is good, but the quality of the pictures is completely unacceptable. The photographs are in black and white, and they appear grainy and unclear. Even with the captions, I frequently cannot even tell what the photos are trying to show. I will NOT be keeping this textbook after my course is over.
