This book covers most areas of engineering, as advertised. However, I find it doesn't have enough depth to allow you to solve real world problems in a field of engineering one is familiar with, while at the same time, doesn't give enough background to allow you to make good use of the formulae in fields that you may be new to. In other words, it is written somewhat obtusely. That's fine if one just needs a refresher of what one has learned before or elsewhere, but makes it difficult to use in a new area.

This huge book contains almost everything the practicing engineer needs, including definitions of engineering terms, solutions to common problems, rules-of-thumb, tables and equations, and references to other engineering sources.

The CD-ROM version of the handbook doesn't have a PDF version of the book, like I expected, but features a book reader application called "DynaText". Even though i like acrobat files better, this reader has certain functionalities that are useful, like complete text and key word search, cut-and-paste capabilities, inter-text links leading to related topics and examples, zoom features, extensive support for bookmarks and annotations, and Boolean and proximity searches.

Keep in mind that no matter how big (2800+ pages) an engineering reference could be, there is no way that you will be able to find every single detail in every field of engineering covered in enough depth to write your thesis. You will find the fundamental information, principles, quick calculations methods, illustrations, and diagrams, which will save the industrial practitioner valuable time.

I really believe this book is an excellent engineering reference. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues in a day to day basic. I found this book to be a helpful reference in those fields and also in other very different fields, like engineering economics and management.

I own both the book and the CD-ROM version, and for me it was a very good investment.

I was looking for a complete handbook and i find this book. I recomend everithing published by Richard D. Dorf and the IEEE
