Teaches you how to go about thinking of solving this great problem that our aid in third world development is often unsustained. Great resource especially for teaching and learning about aid projects.

A remarkably enlightening book. I saw Jen Schneider (one of the authors) speak at a conference recently and was intrigued by her discussion of the deficit model. It says that we tend to view others who disagree with us as having a knowledge deficit; that if they only knew what we know they would agree. Having now been exposed to the idea, I see it play out in engineering work generally, not simply in community development projects. In particular, I think that it is a good model for interactions between design engineers and control room operators. I'm also seeing it other places like politics. Certainly anyone planning to do community development engineering projects should read this book.
