This review is from: England, Our England (Paperback)
As an English ex-pat living for over a quarter century in the USofA, I found this book entirely by accident.......and I'm SO thankful that I did!
You can turn your nose up at Titchmarsh on the TV, but don't ignore this book. In this one volume he lovingly crystallizes and reminds the reader of what we treasure in the culture and collective memory of our 'green and pleasant land', with just sufficient modernity and reality to keep the content from being stale or maudlin. I won't spoil the experience for you by being overly specific, just to say that Alan offers excerpts, verses, lists and other content usually with an intro or footnote from his own pen that I believe will echo profoundly with most every son and daughter of the English sod who picks up the work and peruses same. If you're an Englishman/Englishwoman abroad, you owe it to yourself to get this book and keep it on hand whenever you feel a need for a refreshing bout of 'Limey-ness'. Somehow I opened it up and read it on July Fourth - is that treasonous here in America?- and I KNOW I'll be back to it like a slice of 'cut and come again cake' as the weeks and months go by. If you're not (fortunate enough to be) English, then don't worry, this makes the perfect study guide for a comprehensive appreciation of English culture and life. In short, I recommend this book wholeheartedly and without reservation to everybody who's breathing. Can I say more?? Oh and Alan? I forgive you for being born in Yorkshire! |
