Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-- Cornelius explains why the English are often the forgotten factor in the U. S.'s immigrant experience. He then summarizes English history, presumably to provide background as to why these people left their country, but this is never fully integrated with the rest of the book. Subsequent chapters jerk readers back to Jamestown or relate a conventional political and industrial overview through the 19th century. Blumenthal and Ozer's Coming to America: Immigrants from the British Isles (Delacorte, 1980; o.p.) is more unified and warmer with its many first-person accounts, but it is more of a social history. Cornelius's book does have some merit. In view of the growing importance of American/Canadian alliances, the chapter on English Canadians may be helpful. Interesting material on British war brides will be difficult to locate, since neither the chapter title nor the index hint at its existence. A tremendous amount of information has been shoehorned into the series format; with profuse black-and-white illustrations and some color plates, wide margins, and numerous subheadings, this book will probably gain acceptance among the "I want it now, and I want it short!" generation of report-writers.
