Certainly one of the best references on the subject and on its history and evolution, Clearing up a lot of contemporary misunderstanding of what we have come to think of as just the 'Christmas carol' it lays out in fascinating and colourful detail relevances to social background and the human condition in general. Essentially the carol is a warmhearted and overtly optimistic thing emanating as it does out of a profound faith and sense of joy. The author delivers his material with the same fortitude, the result of which is both an authoritative and an eminently readable book.
