As others have stated, this dictionary is geared towards English speakers and is not bilingual. It is hardcover, short in size but very thick with an extensive amount of vocabulary. However, I discovered a few modern day words such as cell phone, email and Internet missing. Those words are contained in a smaller, Berlitz dictionary I also own. Since the words are not color coded like the Berlitz, they tend to run together making it more difficult to follow. In language dictionaries, it is difficult to find one perfect version so this is a handy addition.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this dictionary is one of the very few English-Chinese dictionaries compiled with English, rather then Chinese, speakers in mind. As such it's much more comprehensive than anything else I've come across. However it's by no means complete - in fact I couldn't find two of the first three words I tried to look up ("migraine" and "facecloth".)

It does have plenty of examples, along with pinyin pronunciation which is very desirable. However, I have frequently found the examples confusing as often the Chinese word used in the example is different from the single word entry and there is no explanation about the reason for difference.

Despite these weaknesses, this is still a helpful resource for English speaking learners of Chinese.

The dictionary is one of the best dictionaries for learning chinese PINYIN geared towards Englishmen like me. Of course many modern words are missing, and this dictionary has lots of words that are now not very common, either because those words are too traditional or overly formal. It is 7.5 inches in length, 5.4 inches in width and approximately 2 inches in Thickness with 1726 pages overall. But this is one of the most extensive pinyin dictionary on the market as of now, I hope the newer edition of this book will be thicker, have white (not yellow or cream colored) pages and MOST importantly include many many modern words as well as some slang terms(which are surprisingly avoided! unlike any other dictionary!).

I love this dictionary. Because I am a senior citizen and there was no pinyin system in place when I was young, the dictionary enables me to find Chinese characters and pinyin easily.

Well written and easy to use. A great help when learning Mandarin. I found the size of the print and the layout of the pages very user friendly. The English words are written in bold and stand out and are easy to see. The book has a hard cover and a dust jacket to keep it clean. I found it to be better than other similar products that I have used in the past.
