farwell has written a great book about a terrible war; he dealt with the big political issues on both sides, the battles, small & large, indivuals on both sides from the politicans, war leaders, individual participants both military & civilian and many of the lesser known people who suffered through the war & the concentration camps as well as pow camps; not only well written but i thought also very objective; i recomend to anyone who wants to know about the boer war & its effects on so african history in the 20/21 st centuries

Farwell is one of my favorite authors and I have re-read this book, The Great Boer War so much that I had to buy another copy. The author is a thorough historian with an excellent ability to make his work very readable. He brings the second Boer War into proper perspective in the study of African continental studies and how war played an important part in shaping fortunes and politics in that part of the world. A rousing up-close story of valor and stupidity, unbridled geed and self-sacrifice.

If you have any interest in the Boer War or British Colonialism, this is great book. Well-written with an inclusive bibliography, so the reader may check the accuracy of the account, I recommend it.

A very good read. Keeps moving but includes a satisfying amount of detail without becoming overly academic. An empire fighting an independent loosely united group of republicans. Very well done.

This was an interesting book as it detailed a lot of history the reader most likely knew nothing about. It certainly cast th Boer citizens in a positive light. I was most impressed on how "gentlemanly" the war was at times (truces to collect dead). It was also interesting as to how the opposite was true too (concentration camps). All told it was a well written book!
