1.0 out of 5 stars No Answer key?
Warriner's text book is virtually useless without the corresponding answer key. The author supplies ridiculously simplistic examples along with their respective answers and then offers ridiculously complex sentences as exercises to test what one has just "learned." Don't even think about using this book to learn grammar unless you can somehow find the answer key. Good...

I learned to refine my writing using this book back in high school, and I still return to it often. It is very thorough and contains indispensable exercises, which allow the reader to practice each lessson. The book starts out with parts of speech and diagramming sentences, continues on through style and punctuation issues, and finishes with discussions and examples of research papers, business letters, tests of english, and public speaking. This book is perfect for any diligent student of writing in English, no matter what level of competence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warriner's English Gramar and Composition, September 11, 2002

This review is from: English Composition and Grammar : Complete Course (Hardcover)
I was issued a book named Warriner's English Grammar and Composition: Complete Course in the ninth grade in 1979. I am still using it. It is the only book ever issued to me in school which I still use. In college, I was issued another much inferior grammar book and basically threw the new one away and kept using Warriner's. Warriner's helped me through graduate school and later through writing published magazine articles. Right now, it is sitting next to my computer.

Everything is laid out in many user-friendly indexes even on the inside of the front and back covers with page links. Every part of English grammar is stated logically and includes every useful example in the English language. It is simply the most well-written book I have ever touched. My most highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Warriner wrote the original of same title in the 50s, June 1, 2001

This review is from: English Composition and Grammar : Complete Course (Hardcover)
I have a copy of Warriner's English Grammar and Composition from the 1950s. It was an old school book. As a professional writer I found the book to be the best, most organized grammar book out there. Often editor's eyes would light up when they saw the book, frequently borrowing it to consult on specific points of grammar. If this book is an updated version of the original I'm sure it's indespensible. Warriner's book should always be in print. I'm a big fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is all you need, July 17, 2003
This review is from: English Composition and Grammar : Complete Course (Hardcover)
I really like this book. I am a high school student taking college English as well as creative writng classes. This book has helped in more ways than I knew it could. It obviously teaches your basic english grammar, usage, and sentence structure. Thats not all though. It shows you how to compose different forms of writing, concentrate on mechanics. It gives you references and information on library tools, reference books, dictionaries, vocab, and spelling. It gives the basic idea on college entrance tests. As if thats not enough, it even shows you how to speak, debate, pronounce and enunciate words, etc.

What more could you possibly want? I have never seen another book like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, July 9, 2005

I was issued the 1963 version of this book in high school during the 1970's. I won't let it out of my sight! I brought it to college, and used it to teach my kids what they weren't learning in school. Now my daughter's SAT tutor wants her to have her own copy. I'm sure this updated version will prove invaluable to her as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Little Red Book of English Grammar & Composition Book for GENERATIONS, October 17, 2007
By
This review is from: English Composition and Grammar : Complete Course (Hardcover)
I have the 1965 (!) version of this book! I used it in GRADE SCHOOL. I used it as a reference in HIGH SCHOOL. I used it as a reference in COLLEGE. I used it as a reference in GRADUATE SCHOOL. My daughters used it (as a reference) in GRADE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE and now GRADUATE SCHOOL. My son is now using it! During homework, there was always a call for "Dad, can I borrow that red English book?" There isn't anything else like it, not today. It explains, illustrates and gives practical examples of English like no other textbook. it's built as a REFERENCE TEXTBOOK, something few books do today. Textbooks used to be like this once. I was on Amazon and wondered by chance if it were still available, I'd like to get an updated copy. I was stunned to not only find one, but find that every single reviewer felt that same way about this book! You absolutely MUST have this as part of your personal reference along with you home medical books and such! When your child asks, "So, dad, mom- is it "lay" or "lie?" - you'll go running for this book, I guarantee!

5.0 out of 5 stars The only grammar book you need, March 6, 2004
This review is from: English Composition and Grammar : Complete Course (Hardcover)
This book is a revelation. I had no clue of grammar when I started reading it. Chapter after chapter, exercise after exercise it slowly started to come together for me. The text is clear, the exercises are well defined and they are very relevant. He managed to make me understand and appreciate grammar.
He uses the classical method with sentence diagramming which relly helped me.
There is a section on composition also, which is very useful, but there there are also other books which you could use to complement Warriners fantastic tome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for writers, December 6, 2006
This review is from: English Composition and Grammar : Complete Course (Hardcover)
I picked up this book after it was recommended by Stephen King in his book "On Writing" pages 121-122 (hardback). Mr. King was right, this is a good book and it has everything you need to become a good writer. I have not reached that point yet, but I know I will eventually get there with the help of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!, January 31, 2006
This book was issued to me in my senior year in high school in 1976. I have kept it by my side, has helped me through my college years and then with my children, and now that I have decided to go back to school and am studying translation, I have taken it out of the bookshelf once again because the books we were assigned do not even come close to the perfection (in my idea) of this book. It has traveled with me through the different countries that I have lived in. It is truly a jewel of a book as far as how it is organized, explained and the exercises are very helpful to reinforce what you are trying to learn.
