Janet Arnold it ain't, but overall this is a great little book. There isn't any in-depth commentary, and patterns are nonexistent, but for what it is, it's a jewel. And what is it you ask? Well, gentle reader, I shall tell you. It looks like a book for children in a lot of ways. Very slender binding and light on specifics of the garments. The images are all tidy little line drawings with blurbs of information about the garments underneath. The clothing depicted is very romanticized and the distribution is characteristically geared towards the "upper crust." But it's a relic from a by-gone era, much like the clothing depicted, and I found it to be a charming, if unprepossessing addition to my costume library. As to the "children's book" comment, I wouldn't expect a very young child to make much sense out of it, but only because the subject matter is rather esoteric for the average rug-rat. I would recommend this book to a young adult with a budding interest in historical clothing, or re-enacting.
