5.0 out of 5 stars epitome of English eccentricity, cosiness, and charm, August 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: English Country Cottage: Interiors, Details & Gardens (Hardcover)
This truly delightful book shows cottage interiors that reflect the pasttimes, habits, and way of living that one likes to believe are essentially "English". These homes look as if they are actually lived in and all exhibit that special British propensity for comfort blended with eccentricity. The ubiquitous Aga is featured in a number of the kitchens, but there are also enough 'jolts' in the form of colour use and collections to make this book memorable and somehow fresh. A book I refer to again and again and well worth adding to your collection - almost a reference on English cottage style. Very good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic English Country Cottages, December 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: English Country Cottage: Interiors, Details & Gardens (Hardcover)
If you love rural, romantic English cottage style, this book offers a collection of 25 authentic cottages featuring this cosy charm. With coquettish names such as Mustard Pot Hall, Monk's Cottage to Smuggler's Haunt, the cottages are explored in chapters which detail the original owners, how the cottages evolved through the years and the current owner's renovation and decoration vision. Then you see the cottages today with their unique decor. Companion gardens and exterior views are also included.

You'll see quintessential English cottage elements such as pine dressers, floral chintzes, wing chairs, leather sofas, cushions, quilts, local jumble shop finds, paintings and prints from different eras, old china, Turkish rugs, paisley throws and gothic windows and shapes. The author's other book The English House: English Country Houses & Interiors is one of my top five favorite decorating books and has more formal and sophisticated design. The cottages in this book are more primitive, relaxed, homespun and humble. The room on the cover of this book is indicative of the styles featured inside.
