5.0 out of 5 stars An Authoritative and Beautiful Set, May 22, 2011
This review is from: English Country Houses (English Country Houses Series) (Paperback)
This is an important, exhaustive, and scarce 3 volume box set. Hussey, one of the premier voices on architecture of his generation, provides detailed historical and aesthetic coverage of over 90 houses. It is remarkable that he managed to produce this volume of work in a three year period (the text originally appeared in the periodical Country Life.)

Perhaps most admirable is the ease with which these books look at the details on individual structures while placing them within larger contexts, particularly in the roughly 60 pp of intoductory materials.

3 sturdy trade paperbacks in slipcase. 766 pp total. Over 7 pounds.

Black & white illustrations throughout: exterior photos, interior photos, period prints, floorplans, and a few elevations. Indexed. Each volume contains an Appendix of architects.

Here's the blurb...

"...these volumes in the famous English Country House series cover the period 1715-1840. They start at the time when English Baroque as practised by Christophyer Wren was in decline and end with the houses of the reigns of George III, the Prince Regent and William IV.

They are the most interesting exposition of the subject ever to be presented. Christopher Hussey, a superb writer and deeply knowledgeable architectural historian, has selected the houses that best illustrate the progression of styles and decoration.

The Country Houses series is not only an excellent soyurce of information but makes fascinating reading. It remains the standard work."

Publishing history: prior to this box set there was a limited edition of 1200 copies in hardback and a reprint edition of 500 copies.
