5.0 out of 5 stars Lively and enjoyable Playford
Although far too early for dancing if you are a War of 1812 / Regency re-enactor [best if your time period is Jacobean to Restoration England]the music is lively, merry, stimulating and just plain fun to listen too. It also has the only version of Mr Beveridge's Maggot [that was played in both the A&E Pride and Prejudice and the Paltrow Emma films]that I've been able...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for listening, so-so for dancing.
I lead a local English Country dance group, and we use this CD quite a bit, but just for 3 or 4 of the songs. Some of the cuts are not at a good dancing tempo. For example, "Gathering Peasecods" is way too slow. OK for teaching I guess, but its hard to be light on your feet in slow motion.

As another reviewer has mentioned, the tempo is not always optimal for dancing. In addition, some of the tracks seem too short to get a set buzzing. That said, they're a super length for listening...the band is great, and the tune choices are excellent! For those Jane Austen adaptation fans who simply must have their own copy of 'Mr. Beveridge's Maggot,' look no further than this cd!

Very well done and representative of some early music. Great for living historians looking to get that "period feel" for the music.

Recently I rediscovered some classic 19th century English novels, and their emphasis on country dance music encouraged me to buy this CD. The music is completely delightful. When listening, I feel like I've just stepped into a Jane Austen novel. There is a nice variety of tempos and excellent quality. Even my children pick up my hands and want to dance.

Like many of others, I bought this CD because it has "Mr. Beveridge's Maggot", the song that I like very much in BBC's Pride and Prejudice miniseries. Although it it not the version used in the P&P, it still provides me lots of pleasure when listening to it. Other songs are also wonderful and make me more interested in Playford's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Playford album, February 19, 2008
This review is from: English Country Dances from Playford's Dancing Master 1651-1703 - The Broadside Band (Audio CD)
This album has some of Playford's best songs, including my favorite, 'Mr. Beveridge's Maggot'. This dance is used in the 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, although it is slightly faster on the cd. You will not be disappointed with this album!!

I bought this for one piece of music played during a dance scene in A&E's Pride and Prejudice as well as Emma. The music is lively and soothing at the same time. Worth every penny.
