2.0 out of 5 stars muddled attempt at an accessible and engaging grammar workbook
Though the earnestness and hard work of the author are evident throughout "English Grammar Workbook for Dummies," the glibness and zaniness of the book's explanations and exercises undermine the book's effectiveness. Like many other texts in the "...for Dummies" series, this book uses a playful voice and an excess of random, silly jokes in an attempt to make the subject...

5.0 out of 5 stars is the best book!, May 14, 2005
This review is from: English Grammar For Dummies (Paperback)
When i first come to America, my english did cause me problems. In Soviet Russia i was strong teacher, my english i know is the best in all of Petropavlovsk. My brother, Mikhail, he say to me, "Nikolai you go to America, they make you rich like czar, take many woman as lover, kill many bear". My brother, he is very wise, is greatest toymaker in all of Russia. So next day i wake up, sell my house, say goodbye to wife and children, and go to America to become millionaire. Then in America, I go to job interview and they say to me "Nikolai, you are not for the job here, you are not the skills we need, your english is poor like child". I take that man and smash his table, i say "someday i will be greatest man in all of country, your children will wish me their father!". That day my anger is best of me. It is then i know i must learn better english, so i buy book "English Grammer it is for Dummies" by Mr.Woods. Now i am perfect english grammer! I write letter to Mikhail, he write back "Nikolai, your english is like a god, you will be millionaire soon! all of Petropavlovsk is proud for you! good luck brother! please send letter when you are president or maybe even czar! Hahaha! also, your wife is killed by bear". So i say thanks to Mr.Woods for his book! When i am czar your family will be spared! Hahahaha! (is joke).

I turn to Grammar for Dummies for a concise, easy-to-understand definition of any given part of speech, as well as for any usage questions/doubts I am having. I have found this book to be an extremely helpful reference for my adolescent language development grad class.

4.0 out of 5 stars The example-sentences will annoy the average reader, June 29, 2005
This review is from: English Grammar For Dummies (Paperback)
The book provides a good reference for people who want to improve their grammar skills.
However, it is littered with absurd, flaky and distracting example-sentences that nearly ruin an otherwise good work. Just a few examples follow:

1. Bertha has frequently buzzed Bubba, but Bubba has not buzzed Bertha back.
2. Nutrella will position the wig in the exact center of the dragon's head.
3. Two minutes after shaving, all of Legghorn's three chins feel scratchy.
4. Rumpus has been studying marble shooting for fifteen years without learning any worthwhile techniques.
5. Justica will judge the beauty contest only if the warthog competes.

If you can tolerate hundreds of similar example-sentences, buy the book.

This is a book that covers all those "little problem" areas in grammar. From when to use a semicolon to dealing with irregular plural possessives, this book is a must-have for anyone in need of grammar-help.

I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking of buying it!

I am a writer, and while my first novel was edited by others, I'd like to try editing my next one without an intitial edit job...this book is my only hope! :-)(...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference for english students, September 1, 2006
This review is from: English Grammar For Dummies (Paperback)
A career change forced me to return to college. After almost 10 years since graduating from high school, I forgot a lot of the rules about English writing. English Grammar for Dummies helped to refresh my memory, as well teach me a few things that I did not learn from my high school english teacher. I was able to pass English 101 with an A (not as easy as it sounds when your instructor is published author and PhD in literature). I am taking English 102 this semester and will continue to refer to the Dummies book as frequently as the class text. I recommend this book for any student, or anyone who does formal writing on a regular basis.

Since grammar is not routinely taught or emphasized in the classrooms, it is imperative that high school students destined to take the SATs have a comprehensive guide to grammar which is simple but complete. This is a great grammar teaching/learning tool, and produced great results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, July 3, 2006
By
This review is from: English Grammar For Dummies (Paperback)
I like to keep this book within arm's reach when I'm at the keyboard; it's simple and easy to use. Granted, the Chicago Manual of Style is an important book to have on hand, but EG for Dummies and Strunk and White are so much handier, and less clunky. Like other Dummy books, it speaks to the reader, not at him, like someone is talking with you as a friend or favorite teacher in a nice, relaxed manner. It's like taking a refresher course which, unless you're a professional proofreader or writer, we can all use from time to time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, friendly and funny. The author did a great job., August 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: English Grammar For Dummies (Paperback)
I only took one grammar class throughout my compulsory education years and it was in junior high school. Actually, I didn't have a choice, but I loved it. I really learned somehting and out of 32 students only 2 of us passed, me and another guy!

Anyway, I like to read and am a good writer, but I wanted to revisit this topic, so I ordered this book. The author does a wonderful job. It's witty and funny while simultaneously clear and concise. A good buy!
