The contrast illuminates both languages.,

English Grammar for Students is a fascinating book. It compares and contrasts English and German grammar, point by point, making it easier to understand the grammar of each language. Reading this book, you'll end with a deeper knowledge of such things as nouns, gender, number, articles, case, verbs, subjects and objects. You'll also learn more about predicate nouns, promouns, personal pronouns, parts of verbs, infinitives, verb conjugation, tenses and much, much more. The structure of both languages will pop out at you.

It has been said, that when people are learning a new language, they find out many things about their own language. The author(s) of this book take this frame of mind into account. Right from the beginning of the book they guide you from basic grammar to more complex structures, always explaining how these structures are used in German and English. I was able to borrow this book from my Germany teacher, so I am unable (leider) now to list some of the terms that are discussed in this book, but please take my word that this book is worth it.
In Fact, I am going to buy it right now in preparation for my trip to Germany.

A perfect slim primer, espcially if you've been out of school for awhile,

I took German in college in 1979, so when I started a refresher German course earlier this year, I picked this up in a college bookstore. Wow, what a life saver! Since I did not have sentence diagramming in grade school, my language skills have always been intuitive, with this book it's all laid out neatly and easily in front of you. EGFSG cleared up many questions that I had regarding clauses, objects of a preposition, etc.
Sit down for an hour or two and read the short concise chapters, it's an amazing little book. It even helps your English day to day. Who says Grammar has to be boring?

Great for learning the basic ideas of German grammar,

This book will not teach you all the rules, cases, or declensions in German. But it will clearly explain what they are, what they correspond to in English, how the German and English practices differ, and what the role of each concept is in German. If your formal grammar is a bit shaky then this is a splendid place to start. If your interest is English grammar in and of its (twisted) self then the book for you is The Deluxe Transitive Vampire, by K Gordon.

A great re-introduction to English grammer. Clearly laid out, easy to follow with abundant examples. It is vital that the English-speaking student of German has a clear grasp of their own grammer before they can begin to understand the complex grammatical rules of the German language. This book does a good job of showing the relationship between English and German grammer.

go to the publisher's website and download the .pdf file for your german text. go to [...] and select german. you'll find an adobe acrobat file that provides the mapping between the chapters in this text and several popular college level german text books.
the mapping is very detailed, even down to mapping subsections in each text. my only regret is not reading the preface sooner to learn about the free file. I'm sure my previous studies could have been much more efficient. other than that the text is great. chapters are short and should knock the rust off your grammer, if you haven't forgotten too much. if you have, then don't be afraid to pickup another text just on english grammer to supplement your studies. this text will help you refresh your grammer enough to learn german grammer, but it isn't meant to teach you english grammer. for that there are many reasonably priced texts of similar length that you can consult as you progress through your studies. don't think you have to relearn english grammer before starting to learn german. just relearn it as learn your german. good luck.

This book is very direct and to the point, exactly what I needed. I've been taking German language classes for six years and, at 33, but I've lost a lot of the "younger years" in terms of English grammar. It becomes difficult to relate Nominative vs. Dative and all the information about direct and indirect objects and possession.
While most people know their grammar in typical speech, without being able to break down your English language into a structure it is extremely difficult to learn German's structure for proper sentence creation. We "just know" English because we've learned it as children and understand what is right/wrong in speech by hearing it -- not as easy in German learning it as a second language. This book calls out many of the basic holes in your knowledge from participles to dangling prepositions and after teaching you the English concept it goes through the German structures to show you the differences or commonalities. The book almost presumes you may have once know much of the parts of speech, cases, functions and tense and really is a refresher course to bring back some lost knowledge. I'd give the product 5-stars but it leans on the "German Textbook" phrase a few too many times. Rather then giving you a couple great examples for weak and strong verbs or other complex examples, it will tell you to "consult your text book," which makes this a secondary booster-pack of information to a mysterious second book. Although it might be a bit redundant with other text, repeating the information benefits the reader. I'd also like to see charts on der/die/das with their cases/functions and such, which I've not found present yet. I guess, for the price, you can only ask for so much. I suggest looking for an unused Used copy on Amazon from students that took courses but were too lazy to actually crack open this valuable book. I found one on amazon for $9 and the binding hadn't even been bent yet! Such is life with school books I guess ;-)

I've been learning German with Rosetta Stone which is an immersion method and doesn't go into explaining the grammer (at least not yet anyway). This book was very helpful in explaining the German grammer, and easy to understand. I could see how this would be a very useful book for anyone in a German class.
