A self-study reference and practice book for intermediate and more advanced learners of English. Covering all areas of language which students at this level find difficult, this substantially revised and updated book retains the clarity, simplicity and accessibility of the first edition, adding to it new and redesigned units and appendices, modified right-hand page exercises and additional exercises. - Easy to use: 136 two-page units combine clear, accurate language presentation on left-hand pages with thorough, varied practice on facing pages. - New additional exercises offer further practice of grammar points from different groups of units. - Designed for self-study: learners choose and study problematic areas with the help of a new study guide. - Key section contains answers to all exercises and the study guide. - Appendices deal with irregular verbs, tense formation, modals, spelling, short forms and American English.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'The first major improvement is that there are many more exercises ... more of the exercises require the student to think and make a choice. Whole new sections have been added such as the one on verbs ... ... the new editions use a second colour to highlight important information. This means that not only are the new editions more pleasing to the eye, but it is also easier to find your way around.' Standpoints, 1994

'Considering the clarity and simplicity of explanation, easy-to-use design and the triple system of finding 'your' grammar point you will soon start wondering how you could survive without the 'blue-cover Murphy' for so long.' ATECR Newsletter

'Never heard of Murphy? Well, then it is high time you rush to the nearest book shop and buy it. It is still the best grammar book and has been so for the last 12 years.' ETAS, Switzerland, 1997 'I am sure Raymond Murphy's English Grammar in Use (EGIU) is never out of your reach. It's a gem.' EA Journal

'Improved layout, an added study guide, and an additional exercise section. I ask all my students to buy this grammar, even beginners because with my help they can benefit from the clear explanations already at an early stage and it saves me a lot of blackboard writing.' ETAS Newsletter, 1995

'English Grammar in Use is an excellent workbook and a good guide to understanding grammar and the four macro skills for use in groups and in individaul practice work.' VATME Newsletter, 1995

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best English grammar books for teaching, January 20, 1998

I have seen many language books, but this one is the best. It's a British publication, but that is not a problem for me, being an American. Extremely well structured with great vocabulary and expressions -- all students seem to like and understand the examples and exercises. Every ESL teacher should have this book for grammar. It covers just about everything and handles the quirks of English thoroughly.

This is one of the best grammar books I've ever found! Very didadict and with an easy to use step by step format (138 units) it's a very good source to the self-student (every unit has a lot of exercises and the book provide you with an answers guide at its end)

5.0 out of 5 stars Every ESL Instructor & Student Should Have This, February 25, 2003
This review is from: English Grammar in Use With Answers: Reference and Practice for Intermediate Students (Paperback)
This is helpful for students who need some improvement on accuracy and the basic understanding of general or particular grammar concepts. Some Intermediate students have more needs than others as more complicated facets of English are brought forth at this level. If a student needs to more fully understand the difference between the usage of "for" and "since" for example, this particular point can be xeroxed and handed out to those who need it. (Many students cannot afford to purchase this entire book in many parts of the world.) There are useful illustration timelines and examples for many grammar functions here. The table of contents makes a point quick to find. A very useful supplement to the curriculum textbook, especially in communitive textbooks (i.e., Headway, Interchange) that are focusing on fluency-based methodology. In sum, students with grammar (accuracy) problems can get specific aid parallel to the text and activities being used in the curriculum.
