5.0 out of 5 stars The best English-Irish dictionary available anywhere., March 28, 2000

This review is from: English-Irish Dictionary With Terminological Additions and Corrections (Paperback)
This is undeniably the most comprehensive English-Irish dictionary available. It was originally published by the Irish government in 1959 and is often used as a companion to the O Donaill Irish-English dictionary. The preface is in English. The thing I like best about this book is the larger number of examples of usage that are included in the entries. The book translates common English phrases into Irish, which is very helpful to the learner. For example, under the entry for the English verb *grind*, there are seventeen lines of explanation, with translations for several short English phrases, such as *to grind ones teeth*, *to grind an organ*, *to grind for an exam* etc. Altogether an invaluable book for anybody who wants to write coherently in the Irish language.

This review is from: English-Irish Dictionary With Terminological Additions and Corrections (Paperback)
A massive - almost 1000 pages - one-way dictionary that is very comprehensive. It is the only English-Irish dictionary of which I am aware that is so large and complete. It was originally written at the end of the 1950s and has been updated through editorial revisions and an addendum with newer terms. Although it is a bit outdated, that is compensated for by its thoroughness and completeness. As usual with Irish dictionaries, I would be happier if it had a phonetic pronunciation scheme.
