5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for ESL teachers and more
Thank goodness for this resource! The book is a practical guide for ESL teachers, as well as all teachers, who have wondered for years how to teach the student who is a new English language learner. Celic combines all the research-based, best practices that immerse new English learners in language, vocabulary, background knowledge and make them strategic learners. I...

2.0 out of 5 stars ELL teacher
A good book and well written.
It is a good contribution but it is very general. In a world in which we are focusing on differentiation, why do we still have books that are K to 6th? There is a chapter on management, can we group K to 6 in terms of the demands of management? We still approach ELL education within the framework of 'one size fits all'

I especially love the chapter on developing academic language. So many ELL students develop social language and sound like they should be good students, but have not developed the academic language they need to be those successful learners. ESL teachers can take this resource and use it immediately. However, it's a resource that all teachers can use. The strategies are simply good teaching and apply as much to all students as to the ELL student. A great find!!! maryland teacher

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Strategies for Developing Academic Language, February 10, 2010

This review is from: English Language Learners Day by Day, K-6: A Complete Guide to Literacy, Content-Area, and Language Instruction (Paperback)
Beyond presenting an array of classroom management techniques, Celic doesn't just tell but shows how to develop academic language and content-specific concepts through literacy. She presents theory and shows exactly how to apply it in the classroom with many examples across all content areas. I learned so much from the everyday snapshots of her classroom. She also offers valuable advice on how to assess and track students' linguistic progress throughout the year. A wonderful resource for ESL and bilingual teachers!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Any Teacher, October 28, 2009

This review is from: English Language Learners Day by Day, K-6: A Complete Guide to Literacy, Content-Area, and Language Instruction (Paperback)
This is a practical, step by step guide for any teacher-new or seasoned. I loved the honest look at the hurdles a teacher of English Language Learners must overcome. I throughly enjoyed the various types of assessment and examples of her own work to see how it could be done. It easy to read one of Celic's strategies and go into my classroom the next day and use it right away. I highly recommend this to any teacher, even if you do not have English Language Learners. This can even be used for your lower level students.

Finally a book that focuses in realistic plans to bring bilingual teaching to the next level. This book is practical, has excellent ideas that I have always wanted to implement but I didn't know how.
Excellent reference for students and teachers on the job.

I am only halfway through the book but already I can see how extremely useful it is going to be. I love that it is so nuts and bolts, and gives you a daily schedule, handouts for tracking students skills, as well as practical tips. Thanks so much for writing the book! I highly recommend it.
