Book Description

Corpus Vitrearum March 1, 2003
This comprehensive two-volume catalogue covers the outstanding collection of Engliah and French medieval stained glass in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Written by curator Jane Hayward, the catalogue is posthumously published as Part I in the Corpus Vitrearum series and represents the culmination of Hayward's pioneering work in the field. 123 panels are examined in depth, ranging from 12th-century border ornaments from the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis to early 16th-century English Passion glass. The catalogue is illustrated with over 500 black and white reproductions and 40 colour plates. It includes discussions on provenance, collection history, dating, style, and iconography, as well as detailed descriptions, restoration charts, and considerations of the current condition of each panel. Mary B Shepard, Hayward's colleague at The Cloisters, provides an indepth history of collecting medieval stained glass at The Metropolitan Museum of Art - a fascinating look at the formative influences behind the growth of one of the most important collections in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid volumes, February 12, 2009
This review is from: English and French Medieval Stained Glass in the Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Corpus Vitrearum) (Hardcover)
Extract from Vidimus, the on line magazine about medieval stained glass, February 2009

Splendid volumes....{these books]are more than a catalogue: the entries also summarise the glazing history of some of the most important schemes in France; the Abbey church of Saint-Denis north of central Paris, Saint-Yved in Braine, Saint-Remi in Reims, Soissons cathedral, Tours cathedral, the Abbey church of Saint Germain-des-Prés in Paris, Saint Urbain in Troyes, Sens cathedral, Saint-Ouen in Rouen, and Rouen cathedral. Individual entries....make fascinating reading.
The books are extremely well illustrated and provided with exemplary detailed indexes. They are monumental works of reference which have the added bonus of being enjoyable to read as well as indispensable.
