5.0 out of 5 stars What a great resource!, April 8, 2000
This review is from: English-Micmac Dictionary: Dictionary of the Language of the Micmac Indians Who Reside in Nova Scotia New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape B (Hardcover)
While trying to learn the Mi'kmaq language from a distance, I found this book a tremendous help. Of course the best way to learn a language is to practice with someone who speaks it. But after my initial exposure I wanted to learn more and to keep fresh what I had already learned. This book helped me do just that. At my next occasion to use the language, I was surprised how much I had retained through the use of this book. There are only several thousand Mikmaq words still known and they all appear to be here. The pronunciation guide is essential, as I'm sure it would be with any dictionary. If I had to say something bad about this book, it would be that it has not been promoted well, and took me a while to find out about it. (I wish I had found it sooner.)

A good reference for going from English to Mi'kmaq, but unfortunately Rand never got around to publishing the Mi'kmaq-to-English version. As a new student of the Mi'kmaq language, this would have been very useful! However, this is probably about the best in the world for researching the Mi'kmaq language.

I have been using this Dictionary, for a few years in my work as dictionarist, mikmaqonline.org and without Rand's dictionary our work would be much more difficult. Hats off to Silas T. Rand for his forsight and to the people responsible for it's continued publication, Wela'lioq
