5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Delicate, enticing, December 23, 2001
By
CLAUDIO (P.O. Box 30283, NAIROBI Kenya) - See all my reviews
This review is from: English Oboe Concertos (Audio CD)
The 2nd Movement of Michael Hurd's Concerto da Camera was selected by critic Fiona Tarkington among the classical recordings for passengers on an international flight. I was instantly hooked by the melancholic but extremely sweet -and easy to like- melodic line and irreproachable performance. I found that the whole Concerto is a little masterpiece. Tremendously jovial Philip Lane's Three Spanish Dances are even more immediately accesible to the listener (if that is possible), and his Habanera is as irresistible as the Pied Piper.
These two pearls are worth the album by themselves. Other works included (Leighton, Blezzard) are perhaps a little more musically involved, but nothing goes beyond the level of appreciation of, say, any lover of Vaughan Williams.

This is a collection of five composers' works for oboe: Michael Hurd, Kenneth Leighton, William Blezard, John Gardner and Philip Lane, all played by Jill Crowthers accompanied by Alan Cuckston conducting the English Northern Philharmonia.

This is nice diverse collection surrounding pieces of composers who have much in common in their choral and operatic pieces, thus perfect composers for the great singing instrument, the oboe.

Crowther's playing is bright and crisp and phrasing is exquisite.

I find all enticing but particularly the Three Dances by Lane and the Blezard's Two Celtic Pieces.

A keeper.
