A REMARKABLE WORK. If it only included the CD or tapes...,

This review is from: English Phonetics and Phonology: A Practical Course (Paperback)
I'm a learner of English as a foreign tongue. After many years of mispronouncing some words, I just found this book to realize about my mistakes in pronunciation, now thanks to this book I'm able to fix them.
Very clear, well structured and easy to learn book for learners of British English. The only regret is that it doesn't come with the audio material. IT IS SOLD SEPARATELY. Nevertheless it's still a good book. But for how long? I ve seen some similar books from other publishers at about the same price but they include de CD. We buyers would be willing to pay a little more for that. I don't understand why some books like this come with the CD or tapes while this one doesn't. Otherwise this book would be perfect.

Excellent for beginners in phonology,
This review is from: English Phonetics and Phonology: A Practical Course (Paperback)
I was introduced to this book as an undergraduate grappling with phonetics for the first time. It was an eye-opener. It really helps to clarify the salient points in a simplistic and easy to understand manner. It was the main reason why I passed my Phonology module. I have since recommended this book to my juniors.

Oriented Towards British-English,
By Steve Carr (Woodridge, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: English Phonetics and Phonology: A Practical Course (Paperback)
All in all, this is a good book. The explanations are clear and the chapters are short; it's a good introduction to phonetics and phonology. People who are interested in American-English pronunciation should be warned that the book is based on British-English--what the author calls "BBC pronunciation" or "received pronunciation". The phoneme set is somewhat different than that of American-English. Still a worthwhile read.

Peter Roach makes a fairly solid presentation of the realm of English phonetics and phonology. Covering such topics as intonation, tone units, pitch, weak forms and much more, the book presents a good overview of the topic.
Even without the CD, I found the book to be a valuable resource to have access to. However, I have to agree that the CD would have been a nice addition to the information given in the book. Overall, I was very impressed with Roach's writing and abilities at making the whole subject very accessible and reasonably easy to grasp. If you are look for a good, detailed introduction, then this is a good place to start. |
