Trying to woo a Russian lady?, June 28, 2001
This review is from: English-Russian Dictionary : Phrasebook of Love (Paperback)
I have recently become married to a wonderful young lady from the historic city of Novgorod, Russia. Before meeting her by chance in 1998, I had never given much thought to seeking a foreign-born bride. Once I met her (she was visiting the US), I became very intrigued by her, her culture, and her language. She returned to Russia shortly after we met, amd we remained in contact until we could meet again, at which point we married. She speaks English quite well, but I still wish to speak her language as much as I can. I knew not a lick of Russian before, and most of the books I find on it are quite good at helping me find a hotel, airport, or restaurant, but not at voicing my true feelings. The English-Russian Dictionary-Phrasebook of Love is intended to help the English-speaking person express thoughts and desires to a Russian with limited English exposure. The authors admit that English does not always translate into Russian well, but the points desired will be made. Some of the expressions are not what Russians themselves (or even Americans) would say, but will be easily understood. Grammatical pointers are included, along with guidelines regarding actually courting, marrying, and bringing into the US a Russian bride (or groom). My bride is currently back in Russia visiting friends and family, and I ordered the Phrasebook of Love right after she left. She does not know I have it, and I have been using it a lot in our e-mail correspondence. She is VERY impressed and shows it to her family (well, not quite ALL of it!). Russain women are among some of the most beautiful and intellectual in the world. However, trying to communicate with one who is limited in her English ability can result in an almost "Tarzan-like" level of conversation. The Phrasebook of Love helps remove that element, as well as impress her with one's desire to share a part of her culture. If you have never tried Russian before, you will have to learn a new alphabet. The Phrasebook of Love includes it as well. Key words of desire are easily located, and expressions including them are abundant throughout. I consider this a very good investment for myself (even though I have already "won over" my Russian bride!). I ordered the Phrasebook of Love from Amazon.com on a Thursday; it was in my mailbox on Saturday. Kudos to Amazon.com, and also to the USPS for this quick delivery!

A Must Have Book, March 12, 2002
This review is from: English-Russian Dictionary : Phrasebook of Love (Paperback)
If you are an English speaker with a Russian girlfriend/fiancee/wife this book is definately for you. It's loaded with just about every phrase you could think of dealing with relationships, love, friendship, etc. One does not even need to have a command of Russian to use the book. In addition, there is quite a bit of practical information such as Russian customs, laws, holidays, names, etc. As someone who speaks some Russian I also found the book to be a good grammar and Russian language tutorial. Definately a book worth every penny.
