Book Description

December 13, 2007
Book Description:

"The Child Ballads are a collection of 305 ballads from England and Scotland, and their American variants, collected by Francis James Child in the late 19th century. The collection was published as The English and Scottish Popular Ballads between 1882 and 1898 by Houghton Mifflin in 10 Volumes. The ballads vary in age; for instance, a version of "A Gest of Robyn Hode" was printed in the late 15th or early 16th century, and the manuscript of "Judas" dates to the 13th century. The majority of the ballads, however, date to the 17th and 18th century; although some probably have very ancient influences, only a handful can be definitively traced to before 1600. Moreover, few of the tunes collected are as old as the words. While many of them had been individually printed, e.g. as broadsides, Child's collection was far more comprehensive than any previous collection of ballads in English. (However, there were comprehensive ballad collections in other languages, like the Danish collection Danmarks gamle Folkeviser, which Child referred to in his comments.)

One Child number may cover several ballads, which Child considered variants of the same story, although they may differ in many ways (as in "James Hatley"). Conversely, ballads classified separately may contain turns of phrase, and even entire verses, that are identical.

The Child Ballads deal with subjects typical to many ballads: romance, supernatural experiences, historical events, morality, riddles, murder, and folk heroes. On one extreme, some recount identifiable historical people, in known events. On the other, some differ from fairy tales solely by their being songs and in verse; some have been recast in prose form as fairy tales. A large part of the collections is about Robin Hood; some are about King Arthur. A few of the ballads are rather bawdy." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT the Loomis Edition, December 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, Vol. 1 of 5: The Child Ballads (Forgotten Books) (Paperback)
I purchased this book for a folkmusic class. Although it arrived quickly in mint condition, it is definitely not the book you want if you are looking for an introduction to ballads. The Child Ballads are an amazing collection of ancient music and I would very much recommend the Loomis Edition of this book. That edition includes pages and pages of useful notes on each ballad, including origins of collecting, explanation of the differences between versions, etc., as well as an introduction by Child himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars brain-exercising ballads, April 10, 2009
This review is from: The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, Vol. 1 of 5: The Child Ballads (Forgotten Books) (Paperback)
Child's ballads exercise your brain and your imagination. There are all different versions of ballads such as The Elfin Knight and Tam Lin. The versions are all similar, except some have some different elements and some require some deductive translating from the old world spelling and dialects. This book version is from Forgotten Books, which also has the books on-line for free, if you'd like to read it before you buy. If I had known about that before I purchased, I would still have bought my copy. It is a wonderful edition to my personal library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, January 19, 2009

This review is from: The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, Vol. 1 of 5: The Child Ballads (Forgotten Books) (Paperback)
The following is a quote from my sister (I purchased the book as a gift for her): "Awesome! Just what I wanted! Although Volume 3 is the Best!" (She is a Robin Hood Buff and most of his ballads are in the third one.)

The book is a nicely bound paperback with a really neat introduction in the front. Very cool.
