An excellent collection of 34 songs, especially useful in teaching students. This collection is a good alternative or companion to the standard Baroque Italian songs and arias. Now with recorded accompaniments by pianist Laura Ward.

English Songs: Renaissance to Baroque - High Voice (Book/CD): The Vocal Library,
By Jaenelle (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: English Songs: Renaissance to Baroque: The Vocal Library High Voice (Paperback)
The book has 34 songs in it by 18 composers. The variety found here is what carries the bulk of the 3 stars. A list is included at the bottom since Amazon doesn't provide a table of contents for this book.
Unfortunately, I have found the accompaniment CDs to be less than helpful. As someone who is not familiar with most of these songs and doesn't know how to sight read, I would have preferred the CDs have a guide track of some sort on them, preferably one that could be switched on and off by adjusting the balance of the speakers. But the CDs just have a piano playing the accompaniment part and this makes it difficult, if not impossible, for a non-sight singer to learn. Anyone who is experienced in sight singing or who knows the songs in here fairly well would probably find this book and CD set to suit their purposes. But if you are more like me, then you will probably find it more frustrating than fun. This book contains: ANONYMOUS -Have You Seen But a White Lily Grow? -Pastime With Good Company -Willow Song THOMAS ARNE -Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind -O Come, O Come,My Dearest -Thou Soft Flowing Avon -When Daisies Pied JOHN BARTLET -Whither Runneth My Sweetheart JOHN BLOW -Tell Me No More THOMAS CAMPIAN -Fair, If you Expect Admiring -Jack and Joan JOHN DOWLAND -Flow My Tears -Weep You No More, Sad Fountains -What If I Never Speed? THOMAS FORD -Since I First Saw Your Face ORLANDO GIBBONS -The Silver Swan GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL -Come and Trip It -Here Amid the Shady Woods -Let Me Wander Not Unseen -Where E'er You Walk TOBIAS HUME -Fain Would I Change That Note ROBERT JOHNSON -As I Walked Forth One Summer Day ROBERT JONES -In Sherwood Lived Stout Robin Hood HENRY LAWES -How Happy Art Thou THOMAS MORLEY -It Was a Lover and His Lass GEORGE MUNRO -My Lovely Celia FRANCIS PILKINGTON -Diaphenia -Rest Sweet Nymphs HENRY PURCELL -Hark! The Echoing Air -I Attempt From Love's Sickness -I'll Sail Upon the Dog Star -If Music Be the Food of Love -Nymphs and Shepards PHILIP ROSSETER -When Laura Smiles
