5.0 out of 5 stars Read 'The Darling Buds of May' first, July 23, 2001
This review is from: Hark, Hark, the Lark!/(English Title = When the Green Woods Laugh) (Hardcover)
About 30 years ago, I read H.E.Bates' 'The Darling Buds of May'. When the Green woods laugh was his follow-up and was equally hilarious as one revels in the triumphs of Pop Larkin, a country wheeler-dealer.

Nothing is too much of a problem for Pop. "Perfick", he says as each event unfolds.

You should try and get hold of the original book (and also 'The Darling Buds of May') and read it, just for the scene where Pop Larkin sells his ramshackle country house to a gullible, drunken American (changed to a London stockbroker in American versions of the book!!). Perfickly Politically Incorrect - and huge fun. You'll discover an author and a style that will have you wishing he'd lived long enough to write some more.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a family!, November 20, 2007
This review is from: Hark, Hark, the Lark!/(English Title = When the Green Woods Laugh) (Hardcover)
This is the second volume in the story of the Larkin family, Ma and Pop Larkin and their ever increasing brood of children. The older girls are enticingly beautiful and even the younger ones show great promise of beauty to come. Pop is a wheeler, dealer, a bit of a con man who can turn his hand to any sort of deal which will bring a good profit. Ma is a superb cook and the whole family enjoys lavish meals on a grand scale, plus the necessary wines and cocktails to accompany them. Pop has just unloaded a huge, white elephant of a manor house on to an unsuspecting, social climbing stockbroker and his pretentious wife, Pinkie, who are convinced that they have had the better of the local country bumpkins. It's a laugh a minute, and just good, clean fun. The first book in the series, The Darling Buds of May", starred the wonderful David Jason, Pam Ferris and gave Catherine Zeta-Jones her first major starring role.
