5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book from Josi Kilpack
I was so excited to read this one after Lemon Tart, and I was not disappointed! Great story line, mystery, a little romance, funny lines, and recipes. Who could ask for a better book?

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry about this....
but I honestly was disappointed in this book...Other than a few little laughs, I found this to hardly be a mystery, cozy or otherwise, and although I liked the first title in this series, I have to say goodbye here. Although this was an extremely fast read for me, it just didn't have the ability to make me want to REALLY know anything sooner rather than later; I just...

4.0 out of 5 stars Innocents abroad ;), September 6, 2010
This review is from: English Trifle (Paperback)
English Trifle is the second of the Sadie Hoffmiller mysteries, but since I won a copy of it, I got to read it first. I found English Trifle completely absorbing! I devoured this book. (I know, I know, very punny.)

But seriously, I loved the twists and turns in the plot, very few of which I saw coming. And it's always fun to romp in the English countryside.

As always, Sadie's a bit on the preachy side, though I found her less so in this book than in Lemon Tart.

And the recipes look wonderful! I made the eponymous trifle for my husband (he lived in Scotland for a few years and had fond memories of that dish). He loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book, April 5, 2011
This review is from: English Trifle (Paperback)
Picture a cool gray rainy day. For me that is the perfect kind of day to sit down with a good mystery.
Josi Kilpack's 2nd Culinary Mystery, English Trifle, is just the mystery I chose to read on our cool gray Saturday.
This book is fast moving and has a lot of twists and turns. More than once I thought I knew who did it and why, but I never suspected the real killer or the motive.
If possible, this book was even better than the 1st Culinary Mystery, Lemon Tart, written by Josi Kilpack.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Cute Cozy Mystery, January 23, 2011
This review is from: English Trifle (Paperback)
English Trifle was a fun, murder-mystery read. I did not know what to expect, but the cover sure made it look delicious! I really enjoyed the recipes that were included at the end of some of the chapters. Too bad I cannot cook. Harry Potter fans will be excited to see a few Harry Potter references mentioned throughout the book. I know I liked them!

English Trifle is, of course, a murder mystery novel, and Kilpack does an excellent job keeping you guessing who did it with all of the twists and turns. I had no idea who did it until it was revealed. I think I thought it was pretty much every character at least once. Once it is revealed who the murderer is, all the pieces fell into place. I could see all the tiny hints throughout the book now pointing towards the murderer, and it all fell into place. I loved not knowing who did it!

The main character, Sadie is a strong character and woman who can speak her mind; I really liked her for that plus she was also funny at times. I also liked that she loved food so much. I have to admit that I did not really like her at first because she seemed like a very nosy person, which annoyed me a bit. That being said, after about the first third of the book, I started to like Sadie and her quirky and unpredictable personality that got her in many interesting situations, some of which were hilarious.

English Trifle is the second installment in The Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mystery Series, but it can be read as a stand alone book. I did not even realize that it was a part of a series until after reading the book. The first book in the series is called Lemon Tart and the recently released third book is called Devil's Food Cake.

This is an adult book, and while I do not think it is unsuitable for a younger audience, they may find it a bit boring since many of the characters are on the older side, including the main character, Sadie. I definitely recommend reading it if you get the chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is MORE than a trifle-ing good read, December 11, 2010

This is the first book of Josi Kilpack's I was able to snatch off our library shelves. Trifle has always been a favorite dessert in our home as we were growing up and my dad says that was one of the reasons he married my mom. She, my mom, makes her trifle is quite a bit different that Josi's, but I think my kids would actually enjoy Josi's recipe more than my mom's,and as I love Danish dessert etc. I'll be trying it out soon.

I was able to follow the story line fine even though I hadn't read the previous one. Sadie is a lovable mischievous widow who seems to always find herself right in the thick of things whenever murder is involved. This one involves visiting England with her daughter Breanna and Liam her daughter's boyfriend who is heir to a title. She still manages to cook up a storm even though she's banned from the estate kitchen on numerous occasions.

The recipe I'm most excited to try is the English scones recipe. The only thing I don't like about these culinary mysteries is that there's no index in the back with all the recipes listed. They totally blend in with what's going on the book but when I actually want to try a recipe it's a pinch hard to remember exactly where they are in the book. When I get my own copies I'll have to write notes in the back of the book! or maybe by then they'll have tear out recipe cards in the back so I won't have to spill nasty stuff on the book while trying to cook!

Another great book by Josi S. Kilpack. I loved the mystery! I can really empathize the Sadie...I'm a bit of a nosy-body too. I love a mystery. I adore the addition of recipes to a mystery. We even have a book club devoted to preparing her recipes and serving them at our club meeting. You have to read the rest of them.
