the best of the best, May 27, 2001
This review is from: Englishman / Robin Hood (Audio CD)
this cd collects together two of the first albums to be released by levy, one of the best, and certainly the most positive, of the dancehall artists who emerged as the 70s turned into the 80s. Though he was to record some excellent sides later in his career, track for track these two albums represent his finest most consistent work. Recorded in his teens when his singing was fresh and sincere and free from the mannerisms he would develop as he realised just how good his voice was. The rhythms, laid by Junjo lawes, were the template for dancehall for the next few years. The two sides complement each other well; Englishman, the first of the two to be released not as polished as the later Robin Hood, with the rhythms being rawer. This is not to denigrate either one. Each album on their own would be worth the entrance money, together you cant miss. If you enjoy later period Barrington you will love this. He was never better ...and you know how good he is! Both albums, by the way, are available in dub versions in the scientist/heavyweight champion of the world series.

Very good Barrinton, July 1, 2000
This review is from: Englishman / Robin Hood (Audio CD)
I havent heard Englishman but Robin Hood is oustanding and I suspect that Englishman could be as good being from the same era. Robin Hood was mixed by Scientist at Chanel One Studios. If you dig the deep bottom bass of Flabba Hunt and the dubbed out guitar and organ accents interpreted in the Scientist style, with Barrintons sweet singing, youll love this. 'Poorman Style' is another excellent Barrington Album, again mixed by Scientist. If you are a true reggae fan, I cannot see you not enjoying Robin Hood. And this is classic Scientist mixing. Excellent dubs of Barringtons stuff appears all over Scientist and compilation albums, but I think the original albums like these with his vocals intact are most enjoyable. These of course may sound best on vinyl. The rich bass just doesnt come out on CD as well.
