Book Description

The first story of future crime, suspense, and genetic engineering mystery in Anthony J Melchiorri's Black Market DNA series has been remastered, re-edited, and re-enhanced since its original publication!

In the year 2058, Baltimore's latest crime epidemic is illegal genetic enhancements. Convicted dealer Christopher Morgan swears off black market genetics for good. Before he's even released from prison, he finds himself on a hit list. Someone wants him dead and he has no idea why.

Once released, Chris takes the first job he's offered. But, soon after, the new boss at his lab is murdered. Chris fears it has something to do with his past—and so do the police. He enlists the help of a close colleague, Tracy Harrow, to clear his name and search for answers. They discover a shocking connection between Chris and the other names on the hit list. In a perilous race against time, Chris and Tracy realize that far more is at stake than just Chris's life.

ENHANCEMENT is a fast-paced thriller about illegal genetic engineering, a medical conspiracy, and the abuse of advanced technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing debut in speculative fiction! June 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This gripping story follows the (mis)adventures of Christopher Morgan, as he not only survives a prison riot, but is rather unexpectedly thrust back into the outside world, where he cannot escape his past in producing and selling illegal genetic enhancements. He has to confront conspiracy, romance, intrigue, violence, and a whole lot more on the way to reclaiming a bit of normalcy in his life.

The author excels at capturing the world that Christopher Morgan experiences, a Baltimore in the not-so-distant future. He manages to create a truly immersive atmosphere that perfectly complements the story and stops short of boring the reader with excessively detailed descriptions. The futuristic setting is very believable, with regard to the central biotechnological elements no doubt helped by the author's background in biomedical engineering. Importantly, the futuristic aspects only serve to enhance the story rather than stealing the spotlight away from it.

While the portrayal of the thoughts and feelings of the protagonist doesn't always quite measure up to the same standard, it retains sufficient depth to make Chris a very relateable character. The major characters he encounters are similarly more or less well-rounded -- while some are definitely either on the white or black end of the spectrum, none (with one very forgivable major exception) fall entirely into either category, and the antagonists have logical motives for their deeds. Indeed, the reader can never be quite sure what shade of grey a character might be until the very end.

This is reflected in the story itself, which leaves the reader (and Chris) guessing throughout, as befits a well-crafted mystery. As Chris uncovers more and more clues, they are never quite what the reader might have expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great plot with surprising twists June 25, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A friend recommended the book, and 99 cents is a bargain for the entertainment value. I'd pay $8-$10 for a novel of this length & detail, and I've read many of that price which were of lower quality than this one!

I enjoyed the main character's struggles to make sense of the conspiracy swirling around him, and the plot still had several unexpected turns. If you've ever been to Baltimore then you'll appreciate his descriptions of visitor attractions and communities. The technical details and the encrypted journal entries are a great part of the story. I like the way that the ending left the protagonist's life still a little unsettled as he re-integrated with society.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced techno-thriller. It was the first book in a long time that I wanted to read all in one day! It's a perfect vacation read, whether you're on the beach or on a flight. It's quick to get into and the story progresses very quickly. I enjoy the twists, which kept me engaged all the way through the epilogue. The story included some futuristic details that were plausible and not too heavy handed. You don't have to be a big science fiction fan to get into the book, it's perfect for all lovers of thrillers! When I finished the novel, I immediately wanted to read the next novel by Anthony J Melchiorri! I can't wait for it to come out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Structured July 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I am not a fan of sci-fi and didn’t have high hopes for this novel set in Baltimore in 2058. I was wrong – mystery and adventure are the key components.

The story begins in a prison where the protagonist, Chris Morgan, has been incarcerated for manufacturing and distributing illegal genetic enhancements. Melchiorri opens the book with strong action that immediately entices the reader to bond with his protagonist. Chris, a research engineer, finds himself paroled early, a condition of which is his ability to find work. Due to his past illegal conduct, he has limited options in his field and must accept a businessman’s shady proposition. Clearly, there’s a price to be paid for the job offer, but it’s not immediately disclosed, which keeps the reader guessing.

The supporting characters, particularly Tracy, are strong and well crafted. Melchiorri writes dialogue with very few tags, using a character’s action to denote the speaker. This is an interesting technique that developed characters and moved the storyline along at a nice pace. More detailed descriptions of some setting and explanations for the purpose of futuristic devices, such as the “comm card”, would have added to the reader’s immersion in the plot. Overall, Enhancement: Black Market DNA is well crafted and a solid story.

I received an ARC to review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! July 17, 2014
By jmw
Format:Kindle Edition
Well paced, gripped me from the first page. Characters believable, great plot, kept me reading. I'm a hard sci-fi fan, but all I know about DNA/genetics is from places like Time magazine - superficial. While Melchiorri uses technical jargon, I never felt lost or confused. While I don't feel like I have a deeper understanding of genetics after reading this, somehow Melchiorri brought enough understanding to these passages for me to read through, absorb, and go forward without having to stop and ask, "What?" Very well done!

For me, this is in part a moral story, tracing characters who have moral compasses that seem to have been bought at the Dollar Store - in other words, their compasses don't work very well, and as they fight through obstacles/situations, they do begin to sense that there must be more to life than Me First.

Personally, I would have preferred less use of the F--- and S--- words. Still, I enjoyed it and recommend it.
