Book Description

May 25, 1998 Sutton Pocket Biographies
With annual worldwide sales of over ten million copies, Enid Blyton is one of the most successful and famous writers in the world. But who was the real Enid Blyton? Was it the driving force who wrote 600 books in her 40-year career and yet found time to be a devoted mother and a friend to countless young readers? Or the cold self-absorbed woman described by her younger daughter? Or perhaps a mixture of both? This biography describes her life and background, her two marriages, the development of her career and her writing methods - sitting hunched over a manual typewriter, supported by a plank on her knees, her inspiration, style and characterization. It also deals with the multi-million pound business that the Enid Blyton industry has become since her death in 1968.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

The word prolific barely does justice to Enid Blyton, who wrote over 600 books in 40 years, among them the Famous Five and Secret Seven series. The author of this concise biography is Blyton's agent, and he admits that, regrettably, Blyton's many personal diaries were destroyed, so intimate snapshots of Blyton's mind are missing from this production. The choice of Tracey Lloyd, a British female, as narrator makes it appear that Blyton is telling her own story. That in itself is confusing and made more so by the frequent use of quotes from Blyton's letters and stories. Lloyd has a high-pitched voice and draws out some words, but overall this is pleasant listening about an inspiring writer.
